بيان: قوله عليه السلام أن لا يقولوا أي لئلا يقولوا.

Elucidation: "An la yaqulu": that is, so that they should not say.

«4»- ب، قرب الإسناد أَبُو الْبَخْتَرِيِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عليه السلام أَنَّ عَلِيّاً عليه السلام قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ وَ هُوَ يُوصِيهِ خُذْ مِنِّي خَمْساً لَا يَرْجُوَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَّا بِرَبِّهِ وَ لَا يَخَافُ إِلَّا ذَنْبَهُ وَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِي أَنْ يَتَعَلَّمَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ ١ وَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِي إِذَا سُئِلَ عَمَّا لَا يَعْلَمُ أَنْ يَقُولَ لَا أَعْلَمُ وَ اعْلَمُوا أَنَّ الصَّبْرَ مِنَ الْإِيمَانِ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الرَّأْسِ مِنَ الْجَسَدِ.

Qurb al-Isnad: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, related from his forefathers, from 'Ali, peace be upon him, that he said to a man whom he was counselling: Take five things from me: (1) Let none of you place his hope in any but God. (2) Let him fear nothing but his own sin. (3) Let him not be ashamed to learn what he does not know. (4) When he is asked about something he does not know, let him not be ashamed to say "I do not know". (5) Know that patience is to faith as the head is to the body.

كتاب المثنى بن الوليد، عن ميمون بن حمران عنه عليه السلام مثله.

Kitab al-Muthanna b. al-Walid: Maymun b. Humran related the like of the hadith above from 'Ali, peace be upon him.

«5»- ل، الخصال أَبِی عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَطَّارِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ وَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ابْنَيْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَمِيرَةَ عَنْ مُفَضَّلِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عليه السلام أَنْهَاكَ عَنْ خَصْلَتَيْنِ فِيهِمَا هَلْكُ الرِّجَالِ أَنْ تَدِينَ اللَّهَ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَ تُفْتِيَ النَّاسَ بِمَا لَا تَعْلَمُ.

Al-Khisal: Al-Mufaddal b. Yazid says: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: I forbid you two things in which lies the ruin of great men: I forbid you to serve God with a false religion, or to give a ruling on what you do not know.

بيان: أن تدين اللّٰه أي تعبد اللّٰه بالباطل أي بدين باطل أو بعمل بدعة.

Elucidation: "An tadina Allah": that is, that you worship God with falsehood — that is, with a false religion or with an innovation.

«6»- ل، الخصال أَبِی عَنْ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الْيَقْطِينِيِّ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنِ ابْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عليه السلام إِيَّاكَ وَ خَصْلَتَيْنِ فِيهِمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ إِيَّاكَ أَنْ تُفْتِيَ النَّاسَ بِرَأْيِكَ أَوْ تَدِينَ بِمَا لَا تَعْلَمُ.

Al-Khisal: Ibn al-Hajjaj says: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: I forbid you two qualities by which the men of the world have come to ruin. Beware of giving people rulings on what you do not know, or of practising religion by what you do not know.

«7»- ل، الخصال ابْنُ الْمُتَوَكِّلِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَطَّارِ عَنِ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ الْوَاسِطِيِّ يَرْفَعُهُ إِلَى زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عليه السلام قَالَ: إِنَّ مِنْ حَقِيقَةِ الْإِيمَانِ أَنْ تُؤْثِرَ الْحَقَّ وَ إِنْ ضَرَّكَ عَلَى الْبَاطِلِ وَ إِنْ نَفَعَكَ وَ أَنْ لَا يَجُوزَ مَنْطِقُكَ عِلْمَكَ.

Al-Khisal: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: Part of the reality of faith is that you prefer the truth, even though it harm you, over falsehood, even though it profit you; and another is that your words should not exceed your deeds.

سن، المحاسن أحمد عن الواسطي مثله.

Al-Mahasin: Al-Wasiti related the like of this hadith.

«8»- ل، الخصال أَبُو مَنْصُورٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَغْدَادِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الطَّائِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُوسَى الرِّضَا عَنْ آبَائِهِ عليهم السلام قَالَ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ عليه السلام خَمْسٌ لَوْ رَحَلْتُمْ فِيهِنَّ مَا قَدَرْتُمْ عَلَى مِثْلِهِنَّ لَا يَخَافُ عَبْدٌ إِلَّا ذَنْبَهُ وَ لَا يَرْجُو إِلَّا رَبَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِي الْجَاهِلُ إِذَا سُئِلَ عَمَّا لَا يَعْلَمُ أَنْ يَقُولَ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ وَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِي أَحَدٌ إِذَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ أَنْ يَتَعَلَّمَ وَ الصَّبْرُ مِنَ الْإِيمَانِ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الرَّأْسِ مِنَ الْجَسَدِ وَ لَا إِيمَانَ لِمَنْ لَا صَبْرَ لَهُ.

Al-Khisal: Imam 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: There are five admonitions such that if you travelled to seek their like or to learn their worth you would not obtain them. Let a servant fear nothing but his own sin, and place his hope in none but his Lord; let one who is asked about something he does not know not be ashamed to learn it; patience and endurance are the head of the body of faith; one who has no patience has no faith.

«9»- ن، عيون أخبار الرضا عليه السلام بِالْأَسَانِيدِ الثَّلَاثَةِ عَنِ الرِّضَا عليه السلام مِثْلَهُ إِلَّا أَنَّ فِيهِ وَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِی الْجَاهِلُ
