'Awali al-La'ali: It is related from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, that he said: The jurists are the trustees of the messengers, so long as they have not entered into this world. It was said: O Messenger of God, what is their entering into this world? He said: Following the ruler. So when they follow the ruler, fear them for your religion.
Al-Ikhtisas: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Whoever acquires knowledge in order to boast of it before scholars, or to dispute with the foolish, or to draw people's attention to himself — let him prepare his place in Hell. Truly leadership is fit for none but those worthy of it. Whoever calls people to himself while among them is one more knowing than he — God will not look upon him with the gaze of mercy on the Day of Resurrection.
Nahj al-Balagha: And he said: How many a scholar his own ignorance has killed, while his knowledge is with him yet profits him nothing.
Elucidation: It is said that what he meant was scholars who gain no benefit from their own sciences, such as the science of magic, conjuring and the like; and it is possible that what is meant by ignorance is false desires and corrupt appetites, for it is these that overcome intellect and knowledge.
Kanz al-Karajaki: Imam 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: The most afflicted of people and the most toil-worn of them is one who has a loose tongue and a closed heart: if he keeps silent he is not praised, and if he speaks he does not speak well.
The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Truly God does not seize knowledge away, but God seizes knowledge by the death of the scholars, until no scholar remains and people choose ignorant leaders and question them, and they give rulings without knowledge; so they themselves are astray and they lead others astray too.
Munyat al-Murid: The Prophet, may God bless him and his family, said: I fear for my community neither a believer nor an idolater, for the believer's faith guards him and the idolater's unbelief and ingratitude bring about his ruin; but I greatly fear for you the hypocrite, the two-faced man who is a glib-tongued scholar: he says things you recognise as good, yet in practice does deeds you count as ugly.
The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: What I fear most for you after me is the smooth-tongued hypocrite.
The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Know that the worst of the worst are evil-natured scholars, and the best of the best are pure-natured scholars.
And he also said: If anyone says "I am a scholar", know that he is nothing but ignorant.
