means the darkness at the end of the night — that is, he was heedless and deceived because of the darkness of seditions and ignorance. Al-Jazari says that in the report of 'Ali, peace be upon him, it comes: people count a man a scholar while he has not persevered even one day in learned questions and study. The Imam's word "saliman" means free from defect, which is either a description of "a day" or means free from ignorance, in which case it is a circumstantial clause from the subject pronoun. The phrase "bakkara fa-stakthara mimma qalla minhu khayrun mimma kathura" means he goes out at dawn in search — which alludes to the intensity of his seeking and his diligence each day, or to the beginning of his life and the start of his seeking; in that case "ma" is relative, and together with its clause is a description of an omitted noun — that is, the less of it is better than the more of it. What is meant by "a thing" is misguiding uncertainties, corrupt opinions, false beliefs, or the pleasures of this world. "Ajin" is stagnant water, used as a metaphor for false opinions and corrupt lower desires. "La ta'ila fihi" means it does not suffice and has no merit. "Hashw" means much and without benefit. Ibn Maytham says: this comparison is because of the uncertainties that come into such a person's mind; and if he wishes to solve an obscure and hidden question, the truth becomes confused in his mind and, because of the lightness of his mind, he finds no guidance.
أقول: و يحتمل أيضا أن يكون المراد تشبيه ما يلبس على الناس من الشبهات بنسج العنكبوت لضعفها و ظهور بطلانها لكن تقع فيها ضعفاء العقول فلا يقدرون على التخلص منها لجهلهم و ضعف يقينهم و الأول أنسب بما بعده.
Accordingly, doubt and uncertainty are like a spider's web; his mind is like a gnat that gets caught in the spider's web and cannot free itself — just so, this person cannot free himself from the uncertainty. I say: it is also possible that people's uncertainties are compared to a spider's web because of the weakness of that uncertainty — so that the uncertainty and doubt are in themselves false and weak, yet the weak of intellect get caught in it and, because of ignorance and weakness of certainty, cannot free themselves from it. But the first meaning is more fitting.
لا يرى أن من وراء ما بلغ مذهبا أي أنه لوفور جهله يظن أنه بلغ غاية العلم فليس بعد ما بلغ إليه فكره لأحد مذهب و موضع تفكر فهو خائض عشوات أي يخوض و يدخل في ظلمات الجهالات و الفتن خباط جهالات الخبط المشي على غير استواء
Because of the abundance of his ignorance he supposes that he has reached the final stage of knowledge, such that no room remains for anyone to think or to give an opinion. Such a person has plunged into the darkness of ignorance and seditions,
