Ibn Dawud said in the Book of al-Rijal: "Muhammad b. Ahmad b. 'Ali al-Fattal al-Naysaburi, known as Ibn al-Farisi (lam, kha' jim) (1), a theologian of eminent standing, a jurist, a scholar, ascetic and scrupulous. He was killed by Abu al-Mahasin 'Abd al-Razzaq, the chief of Naysabur, titled Shihab al-Islam, God curse him." End of quotation. It appears from his words that his father's name was Ahmad. As for his ascribing him to the Rijal of al-Shaykh, the slip in this is plain, since there is no trace of him in al-Shaykh's Rijal — quite apart from the fact that this man's time is much later than al-Shaykh's, as appears from the Fihrist of al-Shaykh Muntajab al-Din, from the authorisation of al-'Allama, and from the words of Ibn Shahrashub. In any case, what we have quoted makes clear the author's eminence and that his book was among the well-known books of the Shi'a.

And the Book of I'lam al-Wara bi-A'lam al-Huda; the Epistle on Religious Etiquette; the commentary Majma' al-Bayan; and the commentary Jami' al-Jawami' — all of them by the Shaykh Amin al-Din Abu 'Ali al-Fadl b. al-Hasan b. al-Fadl al-Tabrisi, upon whose eminence, merit and trustworthiness there is agreement.

And the Book of Makarim al-Akhlaq, which is ascribed to the aforementioned Shaykh Abu 'Ali. This is not correct; rather it is the composition of Abu Nasr al-Hasan b. al-Fadl, his son, as his own descendant stated explicitly in the Book of Mishkat al-Anwar, and as al-Kaf'ami stated in what he appended to al-Duru' al-Waqiya and in al-Balad al-Amin. And the Book of Mishkat al-Anwar is by the grandson of al-Shaykh Abu 'Ali al-Tabrisi, who composed it to complete the Makarim al-Akhlaq of his eminent father.

And the Book of al-Ihtijaj, which is likewise ascribed to Abu 'Ali. This is an error; rather it is the composition of Abu Mansur Ahmad b. 'Ali b. Abi Talib al-Tabrisi, as al-Sayyid b. Tawus stated explicitly in the Book of Kashf al-Mahajja and Ibn Shahrashub in Ma'alim al-'Ulama'. This will also become clear to you from what we shall quote from the Book of al-Manaqib by Ibn Shahrashub.

And the Book of al-Manaqib; the Book of Ma'alim al-'Ulama'; the Book of Bayan al-Tanzil; and the Epistle on the Ambiguous Verses of the Qur'an — all of them by the jurist Shaykh Rashid al-Din Abu Ja'far Muhammad b. 'Ali b. Shahrashub al-Mazandarani
