Al-Narsi is among the possessors of primary works; he transmitted from al-Sadiq and al-Kazim, peace be upon them both. Al-Najashi set down his chain to Ibn Abi 'Umayr from him; al-Shaykh in al-Tahdhib and elsewhere transmits from his book; and al-Kulayni likewise transmitted from his book in several places — among them, in the chapter on kissing, from 'Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi 'Umayr, from him; and among them, in the Book of Fasting, by another chain from Ibn Abi 'Umayr, from him.
So too the book of Zayd al-Zarrad, from which the people of learning and right guidance have drawn. Al-Najashi likewise set down his chain to Ibn Abi 'Umayr from him. Al-Shaykh said in the Fihrist and the Rijal: "They have two primary works which Ibn Babawayh and Ibn al-Walid did not transmit; Ibn al-Walid used to say that the two are forged." And Ibn al-Ghada'iri said: "Abu Ja'far erred in this statement, for I have seen their books heard from Muhammad b. Abi 'Umayr." End of quotation. I say: although the masters of rijal did not attest their trustworthiness, the fact that the greatest of the traditionists drew from their two books and relied upon them — even al-Saduq in Ma'ani al-Akhbar and elsewhere — together with Ibn Abi 'Umayr's transmission from them and al-Shaykh's counting their book among the primary works, is perhaps enough to permit reliance upon them. Besides which, we took them from an old, corrected copy in the hand of al-Shaykh Mansur b. al-Hasan al-Abi, who transmitted it from the hand of the eminent Shaykh Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Qummi; the date of its writing was the year three hundred and seventy-four. He mentioned that he took these and the rest of the primary works mentioned hereafter from the hand of the most eminent Shaykh Harun b. Musa al-Tal'ukbari, God have mercy on him. At the beginning of al-Narsi's book he set down his chain thus: "There narrated to us the Shaykh Abu Muhammad Harun b. Musa al-Tal'ukbari, may God support him, who said: There narrated to us Abu al-'Abbas Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Sa'id al-Hamadani, who said: There narrated to us Ja'far b. 'Abd Allah al-'Alawi Abu 'Abd Allah al-Muhammadi, who said: There narrated to us Muhammad b. Abi 'Umayr, from Zayd al-Narsi." And at the beginning of al-Zarrad's book he set down his chain thus: "There narrated to us Abu Muhammad Harun b. Musa al-Tal'ukbari, from Abu 'Ali Muhammad b. Hammam, from Humayd b. Ziyad b. Hammad, from Abu al-'Abbas 'Ubayd Allah b. Ahmad b.
