عنه كالسيد بن طاوس و غيره و وجدنا منه نسخة قديمة مصححة في خزانة كتب مولانا أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام و مؤلفه من ثقات رواتنا الإمامية و ليس هو ابن جرير التاريخي المخالف قال النجاشي رحمه اللّٰه محمد بن جرير بن رستم الطبري الآملي أبو جعفر جليل من أصحابنا كثير العلم حسن الكلام ثقة في الحديث له كتاب المسترشد في دلائل الإمامة أخبرنا أحمد بن علي بن نوح عن الحسن بن حمزة الطبري قال حدثنا محمد بن جرير بن رستم بهذا الكتاب و بسائر كتبه و قال الشيخ في الفهرست محمد بن جرير بن رستم الطبري الكبير يكنى أبا جعفر دين فاضل و ليس هو صاحب التاريخ فإنه عامي المذهب و له كتب جمة منها كتاب المسترشد.
such as al-Sayyid b. Tawus and others. We found an old, corrected copy of it in the library of our master the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him. Its author is among the trustworthy transmitters of our Imami community, and he is not Ibn Jarir the historian, who differs from us. Al-Najashi, God have mercy on him, said: "Muhammad b. Jarir b. Rustam al-Tabari al-Amuli, Abu Ja'far, an eminent man among our companions, of much learning and excellent theology, trustworthy in hadith. He has the Book of al-Mustarshid fi Dala'il al-Imama. There informed us Ahmad b. 'Ali b. Nuh, from al-Hasan b. Hamza al-Tabari, who said: There narrated to us Muhammad b. Jarir b. Rustam this book and the rest of his books." And al-Shaykh said in the Fihrist: "Muhammad b. Jarir b. Rustam al-Tabari the elder, with the agnomen Abu Ja'far, religious and learned; he is not the author of the History, for that man was of the wider community's school. He has numerous books, among them the Book of al-Mustarshid."
و كتاب مصباح الأنوار مشتمل على غرر الأخبار و يظهر من الكتاب أن مؤلفه من الأفاضل الكبار و يروي من الأصول المعتبرة من الخاصة و العامة.
The Book of Misbah al-Anwar contains choice reports, and it appears from the book that its author is among the great eminent scholars; he transmits from the reliable primary works of both the Shi'a and the wider community.
و كتاب الدر النظيم كتاب شريف كريم مشتمل على أخبار كثيرة من طرقنا و طرق المخالفين في المناقب و قد ينقل من كتاب مدينة العلم و غيره من الكتب المعتبرة و كان معاصرا للسيد علي بن طاوس رحمه اللّٰه و قلما رجعنا إليه لبعض الجهات.
The Book of al-Durr al-Nazim is a noble and generous book containing many reports on the merits, by our paths and by the paths of those who differ from us. It sometimes transmits from the Book of Madinat al-'Ilm and from other reliable books. Its author was a contemporary of al-Sayyid 'Ali b. Tawus, God have mercy on him; we have seldom had recourse to it, for certain reasons.
و كتاب الأربعين أخذ منه أكثر علماؤنا و اعتمدوا عليه.
As for the Book of al-Arba'in, most of our scholars have drawn from it and relied upon it.
و كتاب تسلية المجالس مؤلفه من سادة الأفاضل المتأخرين و هو كتاب كبير مشتمل على أخبار كثيرة أوردنا بعضها في المجلد العاشر.
The Book of Tasliyat al-Majalis — its author is among the eminent Sayyids of the later scholars. It is a large book containing many reports, some of which we have set down in the tenth volume.
و كتاب صفوة الأخبار و رياض الجنان مشتملان على أخبار غريبة في المناقب و أخرجنا منهما ما وافق أخبار الكتب المعتبرة.
The Book of Safwat al-Akhbar and Riyad al-Jinan contain rare reports on the merits; we have extracted from them what agrees with the reports of the reliable books.
و كتاب الغنية مؤلفه غني عن الإطراء و هو من الفقهاء الأجلاء و كتبه معتبرة مشهورة لا سيما هذا الكتاب.
As for the Book of al-Ghunya, its author has no need of praise; he is among the most eminent jurists, and his books are reliable and well known, this book above all.
و كتب المحقق الطوسي روح اللّٰه روحه القدوسي و مؤلفها أشهر من الشمس في رابعة النهار.
The books of al-Muhaqqiq al-Tusi — God rest his sanctified spirit — and their author are better known than the sun at midday.
و السيد عميد الدين من مشاهير العلماء و أثنى عليه أرباب الإجازات و كتبه معروفة متداولة لكن لم نرجع إليها إلا قليلا.
Al-Sayyid 'Amid al-Din is among the well-known scholars; the holders of authorisations have praised him, and his books are recognised and in circulation, though we have had recourse to them only a little.
