The Book of al-Rawda does not stand at a high level of reliability.
As for the two books al-Tawhid and al-Ihlilaja, you have learned their condition, and their manner of expression points to their soundness. Ibn Shahrashub said in al-Ma'alim: "Al-Mufaddal b. 'Umar has a testament."
The Book of al-Ihlilaja is from the dictation of al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, on divine unity; and some of the scholars of those who differ from us have likewise ascribed this book to him, peace be upon him. Al-Najashi said in his notice on al-Mufaddal: "He has a Book of Reflection" — a book on the beginning of creation and on urging men to draw lessons; perhaps this is a reference to al-Tawhid. And he counted the Book of al-Ihlilaja among the books of Hamdan b. al-Mu'afa; perhaps the meaning is that it is among what he transmitted.
As for the Book of Misbah al-Shari'a, it contains some matter that gives the discerning and skilled reader pause, and its manner does not resemble the rest of the sayings and traditions of the Imams. Al-Shaykh transmitted some of its reports in his Majalis thus: "There informed us a company, from Abu al-Mufaddal al-Shaybani, by his chain from Shaqiq al-Balkhi, from one of the people of learning who informed him." This indicates that the book was with al-Shaykh, God have mercy on him, and existed in his time, and that he drew from it — yet without placing complete trust in it, nor was it established with him that it was transmitted from al-Sadiq, peace be upon him. Its chain terminates among the Sufis, and for that reason it takes in many of their technical terms and transmission from their shaykhs and from those upon whom they rely in their narrations. And God knows.
As for the two books of commentary, their two transmitters are reliable and well known, and their contents agree with one another and with the rest of the reports; 'Ali b. Ibrahim and other excellent scholars drew upon them. Al-Najashi counted among the books of Sa'd b. 'Abd Allah the Book of Nasikh al-Qur'an wa Mansukhihi wa Muhkamihi wa Mutashabihihi, and gave sound chains to his books.
The Book of al-Maqalat was counted by al-Shaykh and al-Najashi among the books of Sa'd, and both set down their sound chains to it. Its author is beyond description in trustworthiness, learning and eminence; al-Shaykh transmitted from this book in the Book of al-Ghayba, as did al-Kashshi in the Book of al-Rijal.
The Book of Sulaym b. Qays is of the utmost fame. A number of scholars have impugned it, but the truth is that it is among the reliable primary works; we shall discuss it and its like in the last volume of our book, and shall set down its chain in the fifth section.
