'Uthman al-'Abdi, from Ja'far, from his father, from 'Ali, peace be upon him, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: There is no word save with deed, and no deed save with intention, and no deed and no intention save with the hitting upon the sunna.
«7»- sn, al-Mahasin: Ibn Faddal, from one who related it, from Abu 'Abd Allah, from his forefathers, peace be upon them, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Whoever acts without knowledge, what he corrupts is more than what he sets right.
al-Durra al-Bahira, from al-Jawad, peace be upon him, the like of it.
«8»- ghw, Ghawali al-La'ali: It is related from al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: Two have broken my back: a scholar who casts off restraint, and an ignorant man given to devotion. This one turns people away from his knowledge by his casting off of restraint, and this one turns people away from his devotion by his ignorance.
Clarification: al-Fayruzabadi said: hataka the veil and other than it, yahtikuhu, and it was rent and was torn — he pulled it and cut it from its place until a part of it was split and what was behind it appeared. And a man munhatik and mutahattik and mustahtik is one who does not care that his veil be rent. End. And al-mutanassik is the devotee who strives in worship. And the turning away of the ignorant man from his devotion is either because people, on account of what they see of his ignorance, do not follow him in his devotion; or because by his ignorance he innovates in his devotion, and people follow him in that innovation, and so he turns people away from what is the reality of that devotion.
«9»- ja, the Majalis of al-Mufid: Ahmad b. al-Walid, from his father, from al-Saffar, from Ibn 'Isa, from Muhammad b. Sinan, from Musa b. Bakr, from one who heard Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, say: The one who acts without insight is like the one who travels upon a mirage in a bare flat: the swiftness of his travel only increases him in distance.
Exposition: al-sarab is what is seen in the wilderness of the glittering of the sun upon it at the time of noon, so that it is thought to be water that yasrub — that is, that flows. And al-qi'a is in the sense of al-qa', which is level ground; and it is said that it is its plural, like jar and jira. And it is an allusion to what God the Exalted mentioned concerning the deeds of the unbelievers and their gaining no benefit from them, where He said: "And those who disbelieve — their deeds are like a mirage in a bare flat which the thirsty man reckons to be water, until, when he comes to it, he finds it to be nothing, and finds God with him, and He pays him his account in full; and God is swift at the reckoning." «10»- khts, al-Ikhtisas: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: The devotee without understanding is like the mill-donkey: it goes round and does not move on. And two cycles of prayer from a knower are better than seventy cycles from an ignorant man, because temptation comes to the knower and he goes out from it by his knowledge, and it comes to the ignorant man and sweeps him utterly away. And little deed with much knowledge is better than much deed with little knowledge and with doubt and ambiguity.
