witnesses for God to His oneness and His justice and His generosity and His bounty, cutting off the excuses of the obstinate among His handmaids and His slaves. So excellent is the judgement you have formed for yourselves, and excellent is the abundant portion you have chosen, and by the noblest felicity you have been made felicitous, when you were joined to Muhammad and his pure family, peace be upon them; and you were made the just ones of God in His earth, proclaiming His oneness and His magnification. And well may it be for you! Indeed Muhammad is the master of the first and of the last; and indeed the companions of Muhammad who take as friends the friends of Muhammad and 'Ali — God's blessings be upon them both — and who dissociate from the enemies of them both, are the most excellent of the communities of the messengers. And indeed God accepts from no one any deed save by this belief, and forgives him no sin, and accepts from him no good deed, and raises for him no degree, save by it.

«70»- khts, al-Ikhtisas: al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: The spirit is the pillar of religion, and knowledge is the pillar of the spirit, and clear expression is the pillar of knowledge.

It is the agnomen of 'Abd Allah b. Ahmad b. Nahik, Abu al-'Abbas al-Nakha'i — or 'Ubayd Allah, according to a difference concerning it. Al-'Allama, God's mercy be upon him, gave his entry in al-Khulasa, and al-Shaykh in his Fihrist in the augmentative form, and al-Najashi in the diminutive. Al-Najashi described him at p. 160 with his words: 'Ubayd Allah b. Ahmad b. Nahik, Abu al-'Abbas al-Nakha'i, the truthful shaykh, trustworthy. And the house of Nahik at Kufa is a family of our companions; among them are 'Abd Allah b. Muhammad and 'Abd al-Rahman, the two of Samarra (apparently: al-Samariyyan), and others. He has a book of the Nawadir. There informed us the judge Abu al-Husayn Muhammad b. 'Uthman b. al-Hasan, who said: the licence of Abu al-Qasim Ja'far b. Muhammad b. Ibrahim al-Musawi comprised — and he showed it to us — all that 'Ubayd Allah b. Ahmad b. Nahik related. And he said: he was at Kufa and went out to Mecca. And Hamid b. Ziyad said in his Fihrist: I heard from 'Ubayd Allah the book of the rites, the book of the pilgrimage, the book of the excellences of the pilgrimage, the book of the three and the four, and the book of the reproaches; and I do not know whether Hamid read them to him and they are of his own compositions, or whether they belong to another.
