«61»- dh, Rawdat al-Wa'izin: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: The subsistence of religion is by four: by a scholar who speaks out and employs it; by a rich man who is not miserly with his bounty toward the people of God's religion; by a poor man who does not sell his hereafter for his world; and by an ignorant man who is not too proud to seek knowledge. So when the scholar conceals his knowledge, and the rich man is miserly, and the poor man sells his hereafter for his world, and the ignorant man is too proud to seek knowledge — the world returns upon its inheritance, backwards. And let not the multitude of mosques deceive you, nor the bodies of a people at variance. It was said: O Commander of the Faithful, how is living in that time? He said: Mix with them outwardly — meaning in the open — and differ from them inwardly; for a man has what he has earned, and he is with whom he loves. And await, along with that, the relief from God the Exalted.

Elucidation: "the world returns upon its inheritance" — thus it is in the copies we have; and perhaps what is meant is that it returns together with what people have inherited of wealth and blessings — that is, their blessings are stripped from people as a punishment for these traits. And the more correct is "upon its rear", as will come (1). And he said in al-Nihaya: in the hadith of Salman, "whoever sets right his inward, God sets right his outward" — he meant by al-barrani the open; and the alif and the nun are among the additions of relation, as they said of San'a', San'ani. And its origin is from their saying: so-and-so went out barran — that is, he went out to the open country and the desert. His words, peace be upon him, "for a man has what he has earned", are an explanation that being with them will not harm you: for you have your own deeds, and you will be gathered in the hereafter with the Imams whom you love.

«62»- dh, Rawdat al-Wa'izin: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: He who journeys forth in the seeking of knowledge is like the one who strives in the way of God. Indeed the seeking of knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim; and how many a believer goes out from his dwelling in the seeking of knowledge and does not return but forgiven.

«63»- And he said, peace be upon him: There is no knowledge like reflection, and no nobility like knowledge.

Elucidation: what is meant by al-shukhus is the going out from the town, or what is more general than it and than the going out from the house. And his words, peace be upon him, "there is no knowledge like reflection" — that is, like the knowledge obtained by reflection; or what is meant by knowledge is that which occasions it, figuratively.

ط.The apparent sense is that what is meant by the world's returning to its inheritance is its returning to the first age of ignorance, which the people of the Jahiliyya left behind and which Islam abrogated, spreading beneficial knowledge in the world; and with the abandoning of knowledge and the corrupting of religious upbringing, people return to their first inheritance, which is ignorance and blindness and corruption.
