from 'Ali, peace be upon him, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: There is no good in living save for two men: a scholar who is obeyed, or a listener who retains.
«13»- Nawadir al-Rawandi, with his chain from Musa b. Ja'far, from his forefathers, peace be upon them, from the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — who said: There is no good in living save for a listener who retains or a scholar who speaks.
«14»- And by this chain he said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Four are binding upon every possessor of discernment and intellect of my community. It was said: Messenger of God, what are they? He said: The hearing of knowledge, and the keeping of it, and the spreading of it among its people, and the acting by it.
«15»- l, al-Khisal: Majilawayh, from his uncle, from al-Barqi, from his father, from a number of his companions, raising it to Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, that he said: Two greedy ones are never sated: one greedy for knowledge and one greedy for wealth.
Elucidation: al-Jawhari said: al-nahma is the reaching of one's aim in a thing; and nahima with such a thing, so he is manhum — that is, addicted to it. And
in the tradition: two greedy ones are never sated: one greedy for wealth and one greedy for knowledge.
«16»- l, al-Khisal: it will come among the noble characters of 'Ali b. al-Husayn, God's blessings be upon him, that he, peace be upon him, when a seeker of knowledge came to him, would say: Welcome to the testament of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family. Then he would say: When the seeker of knowledge goes out from his dwelling, he does not set his foot upon anything moist or dry of the earth but that it glorifies for him down to the seventh earths.
Elucidation: it is possible that what is meant by the glorification of the earth is the glorification of its people among the angels and the jinn. And it is possible that what is meant is that there is written for him the like of the reward of this supposed glorification. And it has been said that there is a weak perception in inanimate things; but al-Sayyid al-Murtada said that that is contrary to a necessary tenet of religion (1). And it is possible that what is meant by the glorification of inanimate things and of animals is what reaches the scholar of rewards in exchange for them, since the scholar has a part in their subsisting and their ordering and the profiting of the rest of creation by them; so the scholar is rewarded in exchange for each of them, as though they glorified for him. And God knows.
«17»- n, 'Uyun Akhbar al-Rida, peace be upon him, with the Tamimi chain, from al-Rida, from his forefathers, from 'Ali, peace be upon him, that he said: Knowledge is the believer's lost thing.
