from al-Mufaddal, from al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: The most knowing of people is he who gathers the knowledge of people to his own knowledge; and the greatest of people in worth is the most abundant of them in knowledge; and the least of people in worth is the least of them in knowledge.

I say: the report in full is in the chapter of the admonitions of the Messenger, may God bless him and his family.

«2»- li, the Amali of al-Saduq: al-Muktib, from 'Ali, from his father, from al-Qaddah, from al-Sadiq, from his father, from his forefathers, peace be upon them, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Whoever travels a road seeking knowledge in it, God travels with him a road to the Garden. And the angels lower their wings to the seeker of knowledge, in contentment with him. And there seek forgiveness for the seeker of knowledge whoever is in heaven and whoever is on earth, even the fish in the sea. And the excellence of the scholar over the worshipper is as the excellence of the moon over the rest of the stars on the night of the full moon. And the learned are the heirs of the prophets: the prophets bequeathed neither dinar nor dirham, but they bequeathed knowledge; so whoever takes of it has taken an ample portion.

thw, Thawab al-A'mal: my father, from 'Ali, from his father, the like of it. — yr, Basa'ir al-Darajat: Ahmad b. Muhammad, from al-Husayn b. Sa'id, from Hammad b. 'Isa, from al-Qaddah (1), the like of it. Elucidation: "God travels with him" — the ba' is for transitivity, that is, God causes him to travel on a road leading to the Garden in the hereafter; or in this world, by granting him success in a deed among the deeds of good that brings him to the Garden. And in the route of the wider community: God makes easy for him a road among the roads of the Garden. His words, peace be upon him, "they lower their wings" — that is, that they may be a carpet for him when he walks. And it is said it is in the sense of humility, in magnifying his due; or of tenderness, in kindness to him, since the bird spreads its wing over its chicks. And He, exalted be He, said: "And lower your wing to the believers" (2); and He, glory be to Him, said: "And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy" (3). And it is said what is meant is their alighting at the gatherings of knowledge and their leaving off flying. And it is said he meant by it their shading them with them. And it is said its meaning is the spreading of the wing to carry him

He is 'Abd Allah b. Maymun b. al-Aswad al-Qaddah, client of Banu Makhzum, who trimmed arrow-shafts. The authors of biographical entries gave his entry in their books. Al-Najashi said in his Rijal, p. 148, after giving his entry as we have given it: His father related from Abu Ja'far and Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon them both; and he himself relates from Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, and he was trustworthy. He has books, among them the Book of the Sending of the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — and his reports; and the Book of the Description of the Garden and the Fire. And al-Kashshi related in his Rijal, p. 160, by his chain from Abu Khalid, from him, from Abu Ja'far, peace be upon him, that he said: Son of Maymun, how many are you at Mecca? I said: We are four. He said: You are a light in the darknesses of the earth. And Ibn al-Nadim counted him in his Fihrist among the jurists of the Shi'a.
