for it (1); and he is certain that the Fire is real, and so purifies (2) his striving for deliverance from it; and he is certain that the reckoning is real, and so calls himself to account. As for the mark of the sincere, it is four: his heart is sound (3), and his limbs are sound (4), and he expends his good and restrains his evil. As for the mark of the abstinent, it is ten: he abstains from forbidden things, and restrains himself, and performs the obligations of his Lord; so if he is owned he is excellent in obedience, and if he is an owner he is excellent in ownership; and he has neither partisan zeal nor rancour; he does good to whoever has done him evil, and benefits whoever has harmed him, and pardons whoever has wronged him, and humbles himself for God's right. As for the mark of the dutiful, it is ten: he loves in God, and hates in God, and keeps company in God, and parts in God, and grows angry in God, and is pleased in God, and works for God, and seeks from Him, and is humble before God — fearing, feared, pure, sincere, modest, watchful — and does good in God. As for the mark of the God-fearing, it is six: he fears God, and is wary of His seizing, and passes evening and morning as though he sees Him; the world does not trouble him (5), and nothing of it looms large for him, because of the goodness of his character (6). As for the mark of the affected, it is four: disputation about what does not concern him; and he contends with one above him; and he undertakes what he cannot attain (7). As for the mark of the wrongdoer, it is four: he wrongs the one above him (8) by disobedience, and possesses the one below him by domination, and hates the truth, and displays wrongdoing.
