in His messengers. As for the mark of knowledge, it is four: knowledge of God, knowledge of what He loves, knowledge of what He dislikes, and the keeping of them until they are rendered. As for action, it is prayer, fasting, alms and sincerity. He said: Then tell me of the mark of the truthful, and the mark of the believer, and the mark of the patient, and the mark of the repentant, and the mark of the grateful, and the mark of the humble, and the mark of the righteous, and the mark of the sincere counsellor, and the mark of the certain, and the mark of the sincere, and the mark of the abstinent, and the mark of the dutiful, and the mark of the God-fearing, and the mark of the affected, and the mark of the wrongdoer, and the mark of the ostentatious, and the mark of the hypocrite, and the mark of the envier, and the mark of the prodigal, and the mark of the heedless, and the mark of the slothful, and the mark of the great liar, and the mark of the transgressor, and the mark of the unjust. So the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: As for the mark of the truthful, it is four: he is truthful in his speech; he holds true God's promise and His threat; he fulfils the covenant; and he shuns treachery. As for the mark of the repentant, it is four: sincerity to God in his work (1), the leaving of falsehood, cleaving to the truth, and eagerness for good. As for the mark of the grateful, it is four: gratitude in blessings, patience in affliction, contentment with God's apportioning, and that he praises and magnifies none but God. As for the mark of the humble, it is four: watchfulness for God in secret and in the open, the pursuit of what is comely, reflection upon the Day of Resurrection, and intimate converse with God. As for the mark of the righteous, it is four: he purifies his heart, and sets right his work, and sets right his earning, and sets right all his affairs. As for the mark of the sincere counsellor, it is four: he judges by the truth, and renders the truth from himself, and is content for people with what he is content with for himself, and transgresses against no one.
