adulteration (1); and sagacity, and its opposite dullness (2); and understanding, and its opposite obtuseness (3); and knowing, and its opposite disavowal; and forbearing courtesy, and its opposite open contention; and soundness in absence, and its opposite guile; and concealment, and its opposite divulging; and prayer, and its opposite the neglecting of it; and fasting, and its opposite the breaking of the fast; and struggle, and its opposite shrinking back; and the pilgrimage, and its opposite the casting away of the covenant; and the guarding of speech, and its opposite talebearing; and dutifulness to parents, and its opposite disobedience to them; and genuineness, and its opposite ostentation; and the good, and its opposite the reprehensible; and covering, and its opposite flaunting; and prudent concealment, and its opposite broadcasting; and equity, and its opposite partisanship; and service, and its opposite insolence; and cleanliness (4), and its opposite filth; and modesty, and its opposite the casting off of it; and moderation, and its opposite transgression; and rest, and its opposite toil; and ease, and its opposite difficulty; and blessing, and its opposite blighting; and well-being, and its opposite affliction; and sufficiency of means, and its opposite the vying for more; and wisdom, and its opposite caprice; and dignity, and its opposite levity; and felicity, and its opposite wretchedness (5); and repentance, and its opposite persistence; and the seeking of forgiveness, and its opposite self-deception; and vigilance, and its opposite carelessness; and supplication, and its opposite the disdaining of it; and briskness (6), and its opposite sloth; and gladness, and its opposite sorrow; and fellowship, and its opposite separation; and open-handedness, and its opposite miserliness. So these qualities, all of them among the hosts of the intellect, are not gathered save in a prophet, or the legatee of a prophet, or a believer whose heart God has tested for faith. As for the rest of that among our followers — one of them does not fail to have in him some of these hosts, until he becomes complete and guards against the hosts of ignorance; and at that point he is in the highest degree, with the prophets and the legatees, peace be upon them. And triumph is attained only by the knowing of the intellect and its hosts and by the shunning of ignorance and its hosts. May God grant us and you success in obeying Him and in what pleases Him.
