Elucidation: what is mentioned of the hosts here is eighty-one qualities, and in al-Kafi seventy-eight; and it seems to be on account of the repetition of some of the clauses, either from him, peace be upon him, or from the copyists, in that they added some of the copies to the original. And the intellect here admits of the foregoing senses; and ignorance is either the power that calls to evil, or the body, if what is meant by the intellect is the soul. And Iblis is also possible, because he is the one who opposes the possessors of complete intellects among the prophets and the Imams in the guidance of creation; and what supports it is that the like of this has come concerning the opposition of Adam and Iblis after his rebellion, and that He gave the two of them the like of those hosts. The upshot is that these are hosts for the intellect and its people, and those are armies for ignorance and its masters. Good is its being conducive to good things, or to the conveying of good either to itself or to another; and evil is its counterpart in the two senses. And He named the two of them viziers because they are the sources of all that is mentioned after them of the hosts; so they are two commanders over them, strengthening them, and all of them issue from their judgement. And assent and denial are perhaps among the repeated clauses. It is possible to specify faith to what pertains to the principles and assent to what pertains to the derivative rulings; and it is possible that the distinction is by summary and detail, in that faith is summary assent to what the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — brought, and assent is acknowledgement of its details. And justice is the mean in all matters between excess and defect, or the well-known sense, which is included in the first. And contentment, that is, with God's decree. And expectation is perhaps a repetition of hope; and it is possible to specify hope to matters of the hereafter and expectation to worldly benefits, or hope to what is by desert and expectation to what is not; or what is meant by expectation is coveting what is in people's hands, so that it would be among the hosts of ignorance, set down contrary to the order — and its remoteness is not hidden.

And compassion and mercy — one of the two is among the repetitions; and it is possible that what is meant by compassion is the state and by mercy its fruit. And in al-Kafi and al-Mahasin the opposite of compassion is hardness; and in most copies of al-Khisal it is al-'izza, that is, the seeking of mastery and domination. And understanding — either what is meant by it is a state of the soul entailing swiftness in perceiving matters and knowledge of the subtleties of questions, or the principle of perception; so upon the second it is specified to practical wisdom, so as to differ from knowledge. And chastity is the restraining of the belly and the private parts from forbidden and doubtful things; and its counterpart is shamelessness and not caring about the rending of one's veil in committing forbidden things. And he said in al-Qamus: al-khurq, with damma and with the vowelling,
