to it: Go back — and it went back. Then He said to it: Come forward — and it did not come forward. So He said to it: You have grown proud. And He cursed it. Then He appointed for the intellect seventy-five hosts. And when ignorance saw what God had honoured the intellect with and what He had given it, it concealed enmity towards it. So ignorance (1) said: My Lord, this is a creature like me; You created it and honoured it and strengthened it, and I am its opposite and have no strength against it. So give me of the host the like of what You have given it. He said: Yes; but if you disobey (2) after that, I shall drive you and your host out of My mercy. It said: I am content. So He gave it seventy-five hosts. And among what He gave the intellect of the seventy-five hosts was good, and it is the vizier of the intellect; and He made its opposite evil, and it is the vizier of ignorance. And faith, and its opposite unbelief; and assent, and its opposite denial; and hope (3), and its opposite despondency; and justice, and its opposite injustice; and contentment, and its opposite displeasure; and gratitude, and its opposite ingratitude; and expectation, and its opposite despair; and trust, and its opposite covetousness; and compassion, and its opposite heedlessness; and mercy, and its opposite wrath; and knowledge, and its opposite ignorance; and understanding, and its opposite folly; and chastity, and its opposite shamelessness; and abstinence, and its opposite desire; and gentleness, and its opposite roughness; and awe, and its opposite boldness; and humility, and its opposite arrogance; and deliberateness, and its opposite haste; and forbearance, and its opposite foolishness; and silence, and its opposite babbling; and submission, and its opposite haughtiness; and surrender, and its opposite tyranny; and pardon, and its opposite rancour; and tenderness, and its opposite hardness; and certainty, and its opposite doubt; and patience, and its opposite anxiety; and overlooking, and its opposite vengeance; and sufficiency, and its opposite poverty (4); and reflection, and its opposite inadvertence; and retention, and its opposite forgetfulness; and affection, and its opposite severance; and contentment, and its opposite greed; and mutual sharing, and its opposite withholding; and love, and its opposite enmity; and fidelity, and its opposite treachery; and obedience, and its opposite disobedience; and submissiveness, and its opposite overbearing; and safety, and its opposite affliction; and loving, and its opposite hating; and truthfulness, and its opposite lying; and truth, and its opposite falsehood; and trustworthiness, and its opposite betrayal; and sincerity, and its opposite

11.Perhaps what is meant by ignorance is the soul that commands to evil, and the appetites which are the origin of every fault — not the ignorance opposed to knowledge, for that is among its hosts, as comes in the tradition. And the application of ignorance to the soul comes in tradition 11.

(٣)رجاء رحمة اللّٰه و عدم الياس عن غفرانه فيما فرط في جنبه تعالي، و مقابله الياس عن رحمته و غفرانه و هو أعظم عن ذنبه و خطيئته.Hope for God's mercy and the absence of despair of His forgiveness for what he has neglected of his duty towards Him, exalted be He; and its counterpart is despair of His mercy and His forgiveness, and that is greater than his sin and his fault.
