Section (on the mention of a sermon he delivered to the people). Al-Shaykh al-Kulayni related in al-Rawda, with his chain, from Abu al-Haytham al-Tayyihan, that the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, addressed the people at Medina and said: Praise belongs to God, beside whom there is no god; He was living without how, and there was no “was” for Him — and he mentioned his words, peace be upon him, in the praise of God and the blessing upon the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, until he said, addressing the people: By Him who split the seed and created the soul, had you taken knowledge from its mine, and drunk the water in its sweetness, and stored up the good from its place, and taken of the road its clear part, and travelled of the truth its open way, the paths would have been made plain [1] for you, and the signposts would have appeared to you, and Islam would have shone for you; and you would have eaten in plenty, and no poor man among you would have been in want, nor would any Muslim or protected person among you have been wronged. But you travelled the road of darkness, so your world was darkened upon you for all its breadth [2], and the doors of knowledge were shut upon you. So you spoke by your desires and differed in your religion, and gave judgement in the religion of God without knowledge, and followed the misguided and they misguided you, and left the Imams and they left you. So you became such as judge by your desires: when a matter is mentioned you ask the people of the reminder, and when they give you judgement you say: This is knowledge itself. How so — when you have left it and cast it away and opposed it? Gently: in a little while you will reap all that you have sown, and find the evil consequence of what you have committed
