men; and Mu'adh b. Jabal came to them, and with him a thousand men. And man after man kept gathering until four thousand men were gathered. They went out with their swords drawn, 'Umar b. al-Khattab at their head, until they halted in the mosque of the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family. And 'Umar said: By God, O companions of 'Ali, if any man of you goes on to speak as he spoke yesterday, we shall take that in which his two eyes are.

Khalid b. Sa'id b. al-'As rose to him and said: O son of Suhak the Abyssinian, is it with your swords that you threaten us, or with your numbers that you would frighten us?

By God, our swords are keener than your swords, and we are the more, though we be few — for the proof of God is among us. By God, did I not know that obedience to my Imam is the more binding upon me, I would have drawn my sword and striven against you in God until I had discharged my excuse. [2] The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said to him: Sit down, Khalid; God has known your station and has thanked you for your striving. So he sat.

And Salman the Persian, may God be pleased with him, rose to him and said: God is greatest, God is greatest! I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family — and otherwise may I be struck dumb — say: While my brother and the son of my uncle is seated in my mosque with a number of his companions, a company of the dogs of the people of the Fire shall fall upon him, seeking to kill him and to kill those with him. And I do not doubt — indeed, you are they. 'Umar b. al-Khattab made to set upon him, and the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, sprang at him and seized the gathers of his garment and threw him to the ground, and then said: O son of Suhak the Abyssinian, were it not for a writ from God that has preceded and a covenant from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, that has gone before, I would have shown you which of us is the weaker in helpers and the fewer in number. Then he turned to his companions and said: Disperse, may God have mercy on you. By God, I shall not enter the mosque save as my two brothers Musa and Harun entered, when his companions said to him: “Go, you and your Lord, and fight; we are sitting here.” By God, I shall not enter save to visit the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, or for a case that I must judge; for it is not lawful for a proof whom the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, has established to leave the people in bewilderment.
