Section [the objection of twelve men of the Emigrants and the Ansar to Abu Bakr over what took place after him]. A number of our companions related in their compilations that when the affair was complete for Abu Bakr, and he mounted the pulpit and sat in the seat of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, twelve men objected to that against Abu Bakr: six of the Emigrants — and they are Khalid b. Sa'id b. al-'As, who was of the Banu Umayya; Salman the Persian; Abu Dharr al-Ghifari; al-Miqdad b. al-Aswad; 'Ammar b. Yasir; and Burayda al-Aslami — and six of the Ansar — and they are Abu al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihan; Sahl and 'Uthman the sons of Hunayf; Khuzayma b. Thabit, he of the two testimonies; Ubayy b. Ka'b; and Abu Ayyub al-Ansari.

He said: When Abu Bakr mounted the pulpit they took counsel among themselves, and some of them said to others: By God, we shall go to him and bring him down from the pulpit of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family. And others of them said: By God, if you do that you will have helped against your own selves; and God, mighty and exalted, has said: “And do not cast yourselves by your own hands into destruction.” [1] So come with us to the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, that we may consult him and learn his opinion. So the people went, all together, to the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, and said: O Commander of the Faithful, you have left a right of which you are the more entitled and the more deserving; for we heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, say:
