they had made their souls covet his killing, and their counsel in their house of assembly. God, mighty and exalted, said: “And they schemed, and God schemed; and God is the best of schemers.” [6] And He said: “They wish to put out the light of God with their mouths, and God refuses aught but to complete His light, though the polytheists be averse.” [7]
O Ibn 'Abbas, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, called them in his lifetime, by a revelation from God, commanding them to take me as their friend; and the people bore what they bore of what the accursed one bore of envy towards our father Adam — so that he went out from the spirit of God and His good pleasure, and the curse was fastened upon him, for his envy of the friend of God. And that will not harm me in anything, God willing. O Ibn 'Abbas, every man wished to be a head, obeyed, to whom the world and his kinsmen should incline; so his desire carried him, and the sweetness of his world, and the people's following after him, to be angry at what had been appointed for me. And were it not for my fear for the lesser of the two weighty things — that it should be cast away, and the tree of knowledge be cut off, and the flower of the world, and the firm rope of God, and His trusted stronghold, and the children of the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds — then the seeking of death and the going forth to God, mighty and exalted, would have been dearer to me than a draught to the thirsty and than sleep to the drowsy. But I was patient, and in the breast are troubles and in the soul are whisperings: “so a comely patience; and God is He whose help is sought against what you describe.”
And of old were the prophets wronged and the friends of God slain — until he said: “And the unbeliever shall know for whom is the final abode.” And the caller gave the call to prayer, and he said: The prayer, Ibn 'Abbas; let it not be missed. I ask God's forgiveness for myself and for you; and God suffices us and is the best trustee; and there is no power and no strength save in God, the High, the Mighty. Ibn 'Abbas said: And the ending of the night grieved me, and I was filled with regret at its going. [8]
