peace be upon her, at her door and said: I have no knowledge of a people present of worse presence than you. You left the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, a corpse before us, and you settled your affair among yourselves; you did not consult us, and you did not restore to us any right. So 'Umar came to Abu Bakr and said to him: Will you not take this man who has held back from you to the pledge? Abu Bakr said to Qunfudh, a freedman of his: Go and call 'Ali to me. He said: So he went to 'Ali and said to him: What do you want?

He said: The deputy of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, summons you!

'Ali, peace be upon him, said: How swiftly you have lied against the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family! So he returned and delivered the message. He said: And Abu Bakr wept a long while.

Then 'Umar said a second time: Do not give this man who has held back from you any respite from the pledge. So Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, said to Qunfudh: Go back to him and say to him: The Commander of the Faithful [3] summons you, that you may pledge. So Qunfudh came to him and delivered what he had been ordered. And 'Ali, peace be upon him, raised his voice and said: Glory be to God! He has claimed what is not his. So Qunfudh went back and delivered the message [4], and Abu Bakr wept a long while.

Then 'Umar rose and walked with a company until they came to the door of Fatima, and they knocked at the door. When she heard their voices she called out at the top of her voice: O my father, O Messenger of God! What have we met after you from the son of al-Khattab and the son of Abi Quhafa!

When the people heard her voice and her weeping, they turned away weeping, and their hearts were near to splitting and their livers to bursting. And 'Umar remained, and with him a company; and they brought 'Ali out and went with him to Abu Bakr, and said to him: Pledge. He said: And if I do not, what then? They said: Then, by God beside whom there is no god, we shall strike off your head. He said: Then you would be killing the servant of God and the brother of His Messenger. 'Umar said: As for the servant of God, yes;

but as for the brother of His Messenger, no. And Abu Bakr was silent and did not speak. 'Umar said: Will you not give your command concerning him?

He said: I will not compel him to anything so long as Fatima is at his side.

So 'Ali, peace be upon him, betook himself to the grave of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, crying out and weeping and calling: “Son of my mother, the people held me weak and were near to killing me.” And 'Umar said to Abu Bakr: Go with us
