ولم يحفظوا قربى نبي قريبه ولم ينفسوا فيمن تولاهم علما وقال عبادة بن الصامت يوم السقيفة : ما للرجال أخروا عليا عن رتبة كان لها مرضيا أليس كان دونهم وصيا ( في أبيات ) وقال عبد الرحمن حنبل حليف بني جمح : لعمري لئن بايعتم ذا حفيظة على الدين معروف العفاف موفقا عفيفا عن الفحشاء أبيض ما جد صدوقا وللجبار قدما مصدقا أبا حسن فارضوا به وتبايعوا فليس كمن فيه لذي العيب مرتقا عليا وصي المصطفى ووزيره وأول من صلى لذي العرش واتقى رجعتم إلى نهج الهدى بعد زيغكم وجمعتم من شمله ما تمزقا وكان أمير المؤمنين بن فاطم بكم إن عرى خطب أبر وأرفقا وقال زفر بن الحارث بن حذيفة الأنصاري : فحوطوا عليا وانصروه فإنه وصي وفي الإسلام أول أول

— and they did not keep the kinship of the Prophet, their near kinsman, nor did they begrudge knowledge to him who took charge of them. — And 'Ubada b. al-Samit said on the day of the Saqifa: — What ails the men, that they have put 'Ali back from a rank with which he was well pleasing? — Was he not, apart from them, the legatee? (in verses) — And 'Abd al-Rahman Hanbal, the confederate of Banu Jumah, said: — By my life, if you have pledged allegiance to a man of vigilance in the religion, known for chastity, granted success, — chaste from indecency, of white face, noble, truthful, and long since affirming the Almighty — — it is Abu Hasan: be content with him and pledge to him; for he is not as one in whom there is a passage for a fault. — 'Ali, the legatee of al-Mustafa and his minister, the first who prayed to the Lord of the Throne, and who feared Him. — You would have returned to the path of guidance after your swerving, and gathered of his scattering what had been torn apart. — And the Commander of the Faithful, of the house of Fatima, would have been to you, if a calamity fell, more dutiful and more gentle. — And Zafar b. al-Harith b. Hudhayfa al-Ansari said: — So guard 'Ali about and help him, for he is the legatee, and in Islam the first of the first;
