وضمه إليه ، فحثثت راحلتي حتى قدمت المدينة ولأهلها ضجيج بالبكاء كضجيج الحجيج إذا أهلوا بالإحرام . فقلت : مه ؟

and his drawing it to himself. So I urged my mount on until I came to Medina, and its people were clamouring with weeping like the clamour of the pilgrims when they raise the cry of consecration. I said: What is this?

فقيل : قبض رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله فجئت إلى المسجد فوجدته خاليا وأتيت بيت رسول الله فأصبت بابه مرتجا وقيل : هو مسجى وقد خلا به أهله فقلت : أين الناس ؟ ! !

It was said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, has been taken. So I came to the mosque and found it empty; and I came to the house of the Messenger of God and found its door shut, and it was said: He is laid out, and his family are alone with him. I said: Where are the people?

فقيل هم في سقيفة بني ساعدة صاروا إلى الأنصار ، فجئت إلى السقيفة ، فأصبت أبا بكر وعمر والمغيرة بن شعبة وأبا عبيدة الجراح وجماعة من قريش ورأيت الأنصار فيهم سعد بن دلهم 6 ومعه شعراؤهم وإمامهم حسان بن ثابت ، فأويت إلى قريش وتكلمت الأنصار ، فأطالوا ، ولم يأتوا بالصواب ، ثم بايع الناس أبا بكر في كلام طويل .

It was said: They are in the portico of Banu Sa'ida; they have gone to the Ansar. So I came to the portico, and found Abu Bakr, 'Umar, al-Mughira b. Shu'ba, Abu 'Ubayda al-Jarrah and a company of Quraysh; and I saw the Ansar, and among them Sa'd b. Dalham [6], and with him their poets and their leader Hassan b. Thabit. So I joined myself to Quraysh. The Ansar spoke, and spoke long, and did not arrive at what was right; then the people pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr — in a long speech.

قال : ثم انصرف أبو ذويب إلى باديته ومات في أيام عثمان بن عفان .

He said: Then Abu Dhu'ayb returned to his desert, and died in the days of 'Uthman b. 'Affan.

وبهذا الإسناد إن النابغة الجعدي خرج من منزله وسئل عن حال الناس ، فلقيه عمران بن حصين وقيس بن صرمة وقد عادا من السقيفة ، فقال : ما وراكما فقال عمران ابن حصين : إن كنت أدري فعلي بدنة * من كثرة التخليط أني من أنا قال قيس بن صرمة : أصبحت الأمة في أمر عجب * والملك فيهم قد غدا لمن غلب قد قلت قولا صادقا غير كذب * إن غدا يهلك أعلام العرب فقال النابغة : فما فعل أبو حسن علي عليه السلام ؟

And by this same chain: that al-Nabigha al-Ja'di went out from his dwelling and asked after the state of the people. 'Imran b. Husayn and Qays b. Sirma met him, returning from the portico, and he said: What is behind you? 'Imran b. Husayn said: — If I know, then upon me be a sacrificial camel; from the abundance of the confusion, I do not know who I am. — Qays b. Sirma said: — The community has risen upon a wondrous affair, and rule among them has gone to whoever prevails. — I have spoken a word true and without falsehood: tomorrow the standards of the Arabs will perish. — Al-Nabigha said: And what has Abu Hasan, 'Ali, peace be upon him, done?

فقيل : مشغول بتجهيز النبي صلى الله عليه وآله فقال :
