many times each day at the absence of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family.

When the fortieth day was complete, Gabriel, peace be upon him, descended and said: O Muhammad, the Most High, the Most Exalted, sends you His greeting, and He commands you to make ready for His salutation and His gift.

The Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, said: O Gabriel, what is the gift of the Lord of the Worlds, and what is His salutation? He said: I have no knowledge of it.

He said: While the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, was thus, Michael descended, and with him a platter covered with a napkin of fine silk — or he said: of brocade — and set it before the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family. And Gabriel turned to the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, and said: O Muhammad, your Lord commands you to break your fast tonight upon this food.

'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon him, said: When the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, wished to break his fast, he would order me to open the door to whoever came to break the fast with him. But on that night the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, seated me at the door of the house and said: O son of Abi Talib, this is food forbidden to any but me. 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: So I sat at the door, and the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, was left alone with the food. He uncovered the platter, and there was a cluster (9) of fresh dates and a bunch of grapes.

The Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, ate of it his fill and drank of the water until satisfied, and stretched out his hand to wash. Gabriel, peace be upon him, poured the water over it, Michael, peace be upon him, washed his hand, and Israfil, peace be upon him, dried it; and what remained of the food rose up with the vessel to heaven.

Then the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, rose to pray, and Gabriel turned to him and said: Prayer is forbidden to you at this your hour, until you go to the house of Khadija and lie with her; for God, mighty and exalted, has sworn (10) upon Himself that He will create from your loins this night a goodly progeny.

So the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, hastened to the house of Khadija.

(9) Al-'idhq, with kasra: a bunch of grapes or of dates; in Persian it is called khusha. (10) Ala: that is, he swore.
