Section [“her charge to 'Ali, peace be upon them both, to conceal her grave”]. From Rawdat al-Wa'izin and others: Fatima (peace be upon her) fell severely ill and remained forty nights in her illness until she died, the blessings of God be upon her. And when her death was announced to her, she called Umm Ayman and Asma' bint 'Umays and sent for 'Ali, peace be upon him, and had him brought, and said: O son of my uncle, my death has been announced to me, and I do not see what is with me to be anything but that I am joining my father hour by hour; and I charge you with things that are in my heart. 'Ali, peace be upon him, said to her: Charge me with what you wish, O daughter of the Messenger of God. And he sat at her head and put out whoever was in the house. Then she said: O son of my uncle, you have never known me to be a liar nor a betrayer, nor have I opposed you since I lived with you. And he said: God forbid! You are more knowing of God and more dutiful and more God-fearing and more noble and more severe in fear of God than that I should reproach you with opposing me. Your parting and your loss are grievous to me — but it is a matter from which there is no escape. By God, you have renewed upon me the calamity of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family; and your death and your loss are grievous. So truly we belong to God and truly to Him we return — from a calamity, how harrowing and painful and bitter and sorrowful! This, by God, is a calamity for which there is no consolation, and an affliction for which there is no substitute. Then they both wept together for a while, and 'Ali, peace be upon him, took her head and drew her to his breast, and then said: Charge me with what you wish; for you will find me carrying it out as you have commanded me, and choosing your command over my own.
