When Abu Bakr's mind was settled upon barring Fatima, peace be upon her, from Fadak and al-'Awali, and she despaired of his answering her, she turned aside to the grave of her father, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and cast herself upon it and complained to him of what the people had done to her, and wept until she had wetted his earth, peace be upon him, with her tears; and she lamented him. Then she said at the end of a lament: — There have been after you tidings and a turmoil — the verses. [67]
And in the report of al-Ihtijaj: then she turned back, peace be upon her, and the Commander of the Faithful, the blessings of God be upon him, was awaiting her return to him and watching for her appearance before him. And when the house had settled about her, she said to the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him: O son of Abi Talib, you have wrapped yourself in the wrapping of the unborn child and sat in the seclusion of the suspected; [68] you broke the foremost pinion of the falcon, [69] and the feathers of the flightless bird have failed you. This is the son of Abi Quhafa robbing me of my father's gift and my two sons' sustenance. He has been open in his enmity to me, and I have found him most obstinate in my speech, until Qila [70] has withheld her help from me, and the Emigrants their bond, and the community has lowered its eyes before me. So there is neither one to repel nor one to prevent.
You went out suppressing your rage and returned defeated. You humbled [71] your cheek on the day you lost your edge. You were preyed upon by the wolves and you spread out the dust. You did not restrain a speaker nor avail against a falsehood; and I have no choice. Would that I had died before this little while of mine and short of my abasement. God is my excuser [72] against you as an aggressor, and from you as a protector. Alas for me at every sunrise; alas for me at every sunset! The support is dead and the arm is weakened. My complaint is to my father and my plea is to my Lord. O God, You are stronger in power and might, and more severe in force and in punishment.
So the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: There is no woe upon you; rather, woe to your hater. Restrain
