has made a claim concerning Fadak, and Umm Ayman and 'Ali have testified for her, so I wrote it. [2] So 'Umar took the document from Fatima and tore it up and said: This is the spoil of the Muslims. And he said: Aws b. al-Hadathan and 'A'isha and Hafsa testify of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, that he said: We, the company of prophets, are not inherited from; what we leave is alms. And 'Ali, peace be upon him, is her husband, drawing it to himself; and Umm Ayman, she is a righteous woman — had there been another with her, we would have looked into it. [The argument of 'Ali, peace be upon him, with Abu Bakr concerning Fadak] So Fatima, the blessings of God be upon her, went out from the two of them weeping and grieved. Then, after that, 'Ali, peace be upon him, came to Abu Bakr, and he was in the mosque with the Emigrants and the Ansar around him, and said: O Abu Bakr, why have you barred Fatima from her inheritance from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, when she possessed it in the lifetime of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family?
Abu Bakr said: This is spoil for the Muslims; if she establishes witnesses that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, assigned it to her, well; and if not, she has no right in it. The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: O Abu Bakr, do you judge among us contrary to the judgement of God among the Muslims?
He said: No. He said: Then if there is in the hands of the Muslims a thing which they possess, and then I make a claim concerning it — of whom do you ask the proof?
He said: Of you I would ask the proof. He said: Then how is it with Fatima, peace be upon her, that you asked her the proof for what is in her hands, when she possessed it in the lifetime of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and after him; and you did not ask the Muslims proof for what they claimed against her, as witnesses, as you asked me for what I claimed against them? So Abu Bakr fell silent. And 'Umar said: O 'Ali, spare us your speech, for we have no strength against your argument. If you bring upright witnesses, well; and if not, it is spoil for the Muslims, and you have no right in it, nor has Fatima.
So the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: O Abu Bakr, do you read the Book of God?
He said: Yes. He said: Then tell me concerning the words of God, mighty and exalted: “God only wishes to put away all uncleanness from you, O People of the House,
