وجماعة نحو أربعين رجلا ، فقام خطيبا ، فحمد الله وأثنى عليه ، ثم قال : إن كانت الإمامة في قريش فأنا أحق [ من ] قريش بها ، وإن لا تكن في القريش ، فالأنصار على دعويهم ، ثم اعتزلهم ودخل بيته فأقام فيه ومن اتبعه من المسلمين .

and a company of about forty men. So he rose to speak, and praised God and extolled Him, and then said: If the Imamate is in Quraysh, then I am the worthiest of Quraysh for it; and if it is not in Quraysh, then the Ansar stand upon their claim. Then he withdrew from them and entered his house, and stayed in it, and those of the Muslims who followed him.

وقال : إن لي في خمسة من النبيين أسوة ، نوح إذ قال : * ( إني مغلوب فانتصر ) * 1 وإبراهيم إذ قال : * ( واعتزلكم وما تدعون من دون الله ) * 2 ولوط إذ قال : * ( لو أن لي بكم قوة أو آوي إلى ركن شديد ) * 3 وموسى إذ قال : * ( ففررت منكم لما خفتكم ) * 4 وهارون إذ قال : * ( إن القوم استضعفوني وكادوا يقتلونني ) * 5 .

And he said: I have in five of the prophets a pattern. Noah, when he said: “I am overcome, so grant help”; [1] and Abraham, when he said: “And I shall withdraw from you and from what you call upon besides God”; [2] and Lot, when he said: “Would that I had strength against you, or could take refuge in a strong support”; [3] and Moses, when he said: “So I fled from you when I feared you”; [4] and Aaron, when he said: “The people held me weak and were near to killing me.” [5]

ثم ألف عليه السلام القرآن وخرج إلى الناس ، وقد حمله في إزار معه وهو ينط 6 من تحته .

Then he composed the Qur'an, peace be upon him, and went out to the people, and he had carried it in a wrapper with him, and it was stretching [6] out from under him.

فقال لهم : هذا كتاب الله قد ألفته كما أمرني وأوصاني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله كما أنزل ، فقال له بعضهم : أتركه وامض ، فقال لهم : إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله قال لكم : إني مخلف فيكم الثقلين كتاب الله وعترتي ، لن يفترقا حتى يردا علي الحوض ، فإن قبلتموه فاقبلوني معه أحكم بينكم بما فيه من أحكام الله ، فقالوا : لا حاجة لنا فيه ولا فيك فانصرف به معك لا تفارقه ولا يفارقك ، فانصرف عنهم ، فأقام أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام ومن معه من شيعته في منازلهم [ منزله ] بما عهده إليه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله .

And he said to them: This is the Book of God; I have composed it as the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, commanded me and charged me, as it was sent down. And some of them said to him: Leave it and go. So he said to them: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, said to you: I leave among you the two weighty things, the Book of God and my kindred; they shall not part until they return to me at the Pool. So if you accept it, then accept me with it, that I may judge between you by what is in it of the judgements of God. And they said: We have no need of it, nor of you; so take it away with you — you shall not leave it and it shall not leave you. So he turned away from them; and the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, and those with him of his partisans remained in their dwellings, according to what the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, had charged him with.

فوجهوا إلى منزله ، فهجموا عليه وأحرقوا بابه واستخرجوه منه كرها وضغطوا سيدة النساء بالباب حتى أسقطت محسنا ، وأخذوه بالبيعة فامتنع وقال : لا أفعل ،

So they made for his dwelling and broke in upon him and burned his door and brought him out of it by force, and crushed the Mistress of Women with the door until she miscarried Muhsin. And they seized him for the pledge, and he refused and said: I shall not do it.
