فصل [ نقل كلام المسعودي في كتاب إثبات الوصية ] قال المسعودي في كتاب إثبات الوصية : قام أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام بأمر الله جل وعلا وعمره خمس وثلاثون سنة ، واتبعه المؤمنون ، وقعد عنه المنافقون ، ونصبوا للملك وأمر الدنيا رجلا اختاروه لأنفسهم دون من اختاره الله عز وجل ورسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله فروي أن العباس رحمه الله صار إلى أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام وقد قبض رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله فقال له : امدد يدك أبايعك ، فقال : ومن يطلب هذا الأمر ؟ ومن يصلح له غيرنا ؟

Section [a quotation of al-Mas'udi's words in the book Ithbat al-Wasiyya]. Al-Mas'udi said in the book Ithbat al-Wasiyya: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, rose with the command of God, mighty and exalted, and his age was thirty-five years. And the believers followed him, and the hypocrites held back from him, and they set up for the kingship and the affair of this world a man whom they chose for themselves, rather than him whom God, mighty and exalted, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, had chosen. And it is related that al-'Abbas, may God have mercy on him, went to the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, when the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, had been taken, and said to him: Stretch out your hand, that I may pledge to you. And he said: And who seeks this affair? And who is fit for it besides us?

وصار إليه ناس من المسلمين منهم [ فيهم ] الزبير وأبو سفيان صخر بن حرب فأبى ، واختلف المهاجرون والأنصار ، فقالت الأنصار : منا أمير ومنكم أمير ، فقال قوم من المهاجرين ، سمعنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله يقول : الخلافة في قريش فسلمت الأنصار لقريش بعد أن داسوا [ ديس ] سعد بن عبادة ، ووطئوا بطنه وبايع عمر بن الخطاب أبا بكر وصفق على يديه ثم بايعه قوم ممن قدم المدينة ذلك الوقت من الأعراب والمؤلفة قلوبهم وتابعهم على ذلك غيرهم .

And there went to him a number of the Muslims, among them al-Zubayr and Abu Sufyan Sakhr b. Harb; but he refused. And the Emigrants and the Ansar differed, and the Ansar said: A commander from us and a commander from you. And a group of the Emigrants said: We heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, say: The caliphate is in Quraysh. So the Ansar gave way to Quraysh, after they had trampled Sa'd b. 'Ubada and trodden upon his belly. And 'Umar b. al-Khattab pledged to Abu Bakr and struck his hand upon his; then a group pledged to him of those who had come to Medina at that time of the bedouin and of those whose hearts were reconciled, and others followed them in that.

واتصل الخبر بأمير المؤمنين عليه السلام بعد فراغه من غسل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وتحنيطه وتكفينه ، وتجهيزه ودفنه بعد الصلاة عليه مع من حضر من بني هاشم وقوم من صحابته مثل سلمان ، وأبي ذر ، والمقداد ، وعمار ، وحذيفة ، وأبي بن كعب

And the report reached the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, after he had finished washing the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and embalming him and shrouding him and preparing him and burying him, after the prayer over him with those present of the Banu Hashim and a group of his companions such as Salman, Abu Dharr, al-Miqdad, 'Ammar, Hudhayfa, and Ubayy b. Ka'b
