When the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, heard of the killing of Malik b. Nuwayra and the taking captive of his women, he grieved over it with a severe grief and said: Truly we belong to God, and truly to Him we return.
— Be patient a little; after hardship comes ease, — and every matter has its time and its measure. — The Guardian has regard for our conditions, — and above our ordering is an ordering that belongs to God. End of quotation. [6] I say: this story is among those related by opponent and adherent alike. And it is related that when Khalid killed Malik and took his wife, there was in his army Abu Qatada al-Ansari; and he mounted his horse and went to Abu Bakr, and swore that he would never march in an army under Khalid's banner again; and he told Abu Bakr the story. Abu Bakr said: The spoils have seduced the Arabs, and Khalid has abandoned what I commanded him. And when 'Umar heard that, he spoke about him before Abu Bakr, and spoke at length, and said: Retaliation has become due upon him. Then when Khalid b. al-Walid came, unaware, he entered the mosque wearing a tunic upon which were the traces of iron, wrapped in a turban of his in which he had stuck arrows. And when he entered the mosque, 'Umar rose to him and pulled the arrows from his head and broke them.
Then he said: O enemy of yourself! You set upon a Muslim man and killed him, and then leapt upon his wife! By God, we shall stone you with your own stones. And Khalid did not speak to him, supposing only that Abu Bakr's opinion of him was like 'Umar's — until he entered upon Abu Bakr and excused himself to him, and he excused him and passed over it. So Khalid went out, and 'Umar was sitting in the mosque; and he said: Come here to me, O son of Umm Shamla! Then 'Umar knew that Abu Bakr was pleased with him, so he did not speak to him and went into his house.
The 'allama al-Majlisi, may his secret be sanctified, said: 'Umar's reproach and his rage against Khalid over the killing of Malik b. Nuwayra were not out of regard for the religion nor out of care for the law of the Master of the Messengers; rather he was pained at his killing because he had been his ally in the age of ignorance. And he pardoned Khalid when he learned that he was the killer of Sa'd b.
