"and that He may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the idolatrous men and idolatrous women, who think evil thoughts of God. Upon them be the evil turn of fortune; God is angry with them and has cursed them and has prepared Hell for them — and an evil destination it is!" But the complete and excellent man is he who has made his lower desire follow the command of God and expends his strength in the way of God's pleasure. He reckons abasement that goes with the truth nearer to everlasting honour than honour in the way of falsehood, and he knows that bearing a little harm brings about the lasting of blessing in the world to come, which has no end, and that joy that goes with following the lower desire ends in a punishment that does not pass away. Take that complete man as your example and follow his way; seek access to God through him, for his prayer is answered, his request granted, and he will not be disappointed.

Elucidation: "Fa-idha lam yunzil 'alimun ila 'alim" — "lam yunzil" is from the fourth or the second form; that is, when a scholar does not teach his knowledge, whether out of dissimulation or because the learners are not fit for it, and then that scholar dies, those who seek the worthless goods of this world turn people away from that knowledge because the helpers of knowledge are few, and bar the truth from those worthy of it because the truth's supporters are gone. "Al-muntahilin mawaddatana": this phrase is in truth by way of allusion, since "intihal" means to lay claim to something without being characterised by it; and it may possibly mean: those who have made our love their religion and creed. "Tafallatat minhum al-ahadith": that is, the memorising of the hadiths slipped from their grasp and the recording of the Sunna proved too much for them, so they have no power over it. "Fa-ttakhadhu 'ibad Allah khawalan": al-Jazari says, in the hadith of Abu Hurayra it is related: When the sons of Abu al-'As reach thirty, they take God's servants as their servants and slaves — that is, they take God's servants into service and bondage. "Wa malahu duwalan": that is, they pass the wealth of God's servants from hand to hand among themselves. "Ashbah al-kilab" is a description of the people. "Tamaththalu": they liken themselves to the truthful Imams and claim their rank and station. "Fa-anifu": that is, they are proud and disdainful. "Samtihi wa hadyihi": al-Fayruzabadi says: "al-samt" means the way and conduct of the people of good; "al-hady" means conduct and manner. "Tamawata": al-Fayruzabadi says: "al-mutamawit" means an ostentatious worshipper. Al-Jazari says: "tamawata al-rajul" is said when a man multiplies his worship, asceticism and fasting and displays them while pretending to hide them. "Takhada'a": that is, he displayed humility and submissiveness in all his movements. "Fa-ruwaydan": that is, give it time, go slowly, and in following
