Al-Ghayba of al-Nu'mani: Ibn Muskan says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, saying: A group take me for their Imam; by God, I am not their leader. May God curse them: whatever I veil over, they tear the veil from it (they make it public). I say such and such, and they say: surely he meant this and that. I am the Imam only of one who obeys me.

Al-Ghayba of al-Nu'mani: It is related from Abu Basir that he said: I heard Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, saying: A secret which God confided to Gabriel, and Gabriel confided to Muhammad — may God bless him and his family — and Muhammad confided to 'Ali, peace be upon him, and 'Ali to whomever God willed, each entrusting it in turn to another; and then you speak of it at the head of every street and lane.

Al-Ghayba of al-Nu'mani: Idris b. Ziyad al-Kufi says: One of our teachers related and said: I took your hand just as Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, took my hand and said: O Mufaddal, this cause (the walaya) is not mere words — no, by God — rather you must guard it as God has guarded it, and hold it in honour as God has held it in honour, and render its due as God has rendered its due.

Al-Ghayba of al-Nu'mani: Hafs b. Nasib says: In the days when Mu'alla b. Khunays (Imam al-Sadiq's agent, peace be upon him) had been killed, I went in to him. He said to me: O Hafs, I had told Mu'alla certain things; he spread them abroad and so delivered himself to the blade. I had told him: We have a word, and whoever guards it (refrains from telling it) God will guard him too, and will keep his religion and his world from harm; and whoever spreads it abroad contrary to [our wish], God will take from him his religion and his world. O Mu'alla, whoever keeps hidden a hadith of ours that is hard to grasp and hard for ordinary people to believe, God will set it as a light before his eyes and grant him honour among people; and whoever spreads that hadith abroad, death will not come to him until a weapon overtakes him (until he is slain by a weapon), or he leaves this world in wandering and exile.

Taghlib says: I said to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: I sit in the mosque and people come and ask me questions; if I do not answer them they do not accept it from me, and I do not like to answer with your words and the hadiths related from you. He said to me: Tell them what you know of their own sayings.
