By "'amya'" is meant the doubtful question whose knowledge is hard to attain. One says "'amiya 'alayhi al-amr" when a matter becomes confused. One says "ijtalaytu al-'arus" when you look upon the bride adorned and radiant; and by "sight" is meant the sight of the heart. "Muqanna'a" is another adjective of "'amya'", or a circumstantial qualifier of it — that is, veiled in unseen matters hidden from men's minds. Al-Jazari said: in the hadith of Imam 'Ali, peace be upon him, it is reported: Most sermons are of the ravings of Satan. "Al-shiqshiqa" is a red membrane that the Arabian camel pushes out of its throat and inflates, and it appears at the corner of its mouth; this membrane is not found in any but the Arabian camel. So said al-Harawi: in this hadith 'Ali, peace be upon him, likened the eloquent and fluent man to a stallion camel from whose mouth a red membrane comes out all at once, and his tongue to that inflated membrane coming from the camel's mouth — and this is open to reflection. Then he said: of this kind is the hadith of 'Ali, peace be upon him, in his sermon where he said: That speech was a shiqshiqa that came forth and then subsided. And there is verse on this too: "a tongue like the red inflated membrane of a camel's mouth, or like a cutting Yemeni blade." "Lisanan" is perhaps the object of an elided verb, such as "azhara" or "akhraja" or "u'titu". It may also be conjoined to "sahih al-fikr" with the conjunctive waw elided. Al-Fayruzabadi said: "Banu Rahb" are a clan of Hamdan, and "Arhab" is a tribe of that clan, or the place of that clan; of this kind is "al-naja'ib al-arhabiyyat", the noble mounts of that clan. End of al-Fayruzabadi's words. So the Imam, peace be upon him, likened his tongue to the red membrane issuing from the mouth of a noble Arhabi stallion camel. And in al-Nihaya it has "ka'l-husam al-yamani", that is, a Yemeni sword, for Yemeni swords were famed for their quality; and in the verse the word "battar" is placed after "husam". Al-Fayruzabadi said: "al-batr" means cutting, or uprooting, or destroying; and one says "sayfun batirun wa battarun", and "butar" on the pattern of "ghurab" is used too. Al-Fayruzabadi said: "al-dhakar" is the hardest and finest iron, and of this is "huwa adhkaru minhu", that is, keener than the other; a "mudhakkar" sword is a well-tempered blade. He says: a second time the Imam described his tongue as a cutting blade of noble stock, of the highest quality. "Arba" means the cares increased and doubled. "Bawahi al-durar" is the plural of "bahiya" from "baha'", beauty — that is, beautiful pearls; "bawahi" is the object of "arba", and the subject of "arba" is a pronoun referring to the heart. "Mudarrab al-asgharayn": in some copies it is "mudhdhab"; one says "fi lisanihi dharaba", that is, in So-and-so's tongue there is sharpness and cutting edge.
And in some copies it is "mudarrab". Al-Fayruzabadi said: "al-mudarrab", on the pattern of "mu'azzam", is a thing tried and proved. "Al-dhariba" is habituation and boldness in a matter. Al-Fayruzabadi said: "al-asgharan" are the heart and the tongue; and in some copies it is "aqisu bi-ma qad mada ma ghabar".
