من العلم و إنما أنت بمنزلة رجل من الصديقين لأنك تقول حدثنا فلان عن فلان عن رسول اللّٰه صلى اللّٰه عليه و آله عن جبرئيل عن اللّٰه فيسمعه الناس منك و يكتبونه عنك و يتخذونه دينا يعولون عليه و حكما ينتهون إليه و إنما أنهاك أن تعود لمثل الذي كنت عليه فإني أخاف عليك غضب من يأخذ العارفين قبل الجاهلين و يعذب فساق حملة القرآن قبل الكافرين فما رأيت حالا أعجب من حالنا و لا عظة أبلغ مما اتفق لنا و لما وقف صاحبي اضطرب لها اضطرابا بان فيها أثر لطف اللّٰه تعالى لنا و حدثني بعد ذلك أنه انزجر عن تفريطات كانت تقع منه في الدين و الدنيا و الحمد لله.

and you are like one of the truthful, for you say: So-and-so related to us, from So-and-so, from the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — from Gabriel, from God, exalted. And people hear it from you and write it down and take it as the rulings of their religion and rely upon it and reckon it God's command and act upon it. And I would restrain you from such a thing as you did, for I fear for you the wrath of Him who calls the knowing to account before the ignorant and punishes the transgressors who know the Qur'an before the unbelievers. I have never seen anything more astonishing than that, nor a more telling admonition than what befell us. When my companion learned of that writing he was deeply shaken, so that the trace of God's kindness towards us showed in his face; and afterwards he told me that he had turned away and recoiled from his past failings in religion and in the affairs of this world. Praise be to God.

«41»- عدة، عدة الداعي فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى إِنَّما يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبادِهِ الْعُلَماءُ قَالَ يَعْنِي مَنْ يُصَدِّقُ قَوْلَهُ فِعْلُهُ وَ مَنْ لَمْ يُصَدِّقْ قَوْلَهُ فِعْلُهُ فَلَيْسَ بِعَالِمٍ.

'Uddat al-Da'i: It is related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, concerning the noble verse "Only those of His servants who have knowledge fear God": that is, the scholar is one whose deeds confirm his words; and one whose words are not confirmed by his deeds is no scholar.

«42»- مُنْيَةُ الْمُرِيدِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عليه السلام قَالَ كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عليه السلام يَقُولُ إِنَّ لِلْعَالِمِ ثَلَاثَ عَلَامَاتٍ الْعِلْمَ وَ الْحِلْمَ وَ الصَّمْتَ وَ لِلْمُتَكَلِّفِ ثَلَاثَ عَلَامَاتٍ يُنَازِعُ مَنْ فَوْقَهُ بِالْمَعْصِيَةِ وَ يَظْلِمُ مَنْ دُونَهُ بِالْغَلَبَةِ وَ يُظَاهِرُ الظَّلَمَةَ ١.

Munyat al-Murid: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, used to say: The scholar has three marks: knowledge, forbearance and silence. And the pretender has three marks: he opposes the one above him by disobedience, wrongs the one below him by domination, and supports the oppressors.

Chapter 12: The etiquette of teaching

الكهف: «قالَ لا تُؤاخِذْنِي بِما نَسِيتُ وَ لا تُرْهِقْنِي مِنْ أَمْرِي عُسْراً»(73)

al-Kahf: "[Moses] said: Do not take me to task for what I forgot, nor lay upon me a hard command in my affair."

«1»- ما، الأمالي للشيخ الطوسي أَبُو الْمُفَضَّلِ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى بْنِ الْعَبَّادِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ السَّدُوسِيِّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَوْنِ بْنِ أَبِي حَرْبِ بْنِ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ الدُّؤَلِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي حَرْبِ بْنِ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ عليهما السلام عَنْ سُؤَالٍ فَبَادَرَ فَدَخَلَ مَنْزِلَهُ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ هَا أَنَا يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قَالَ مَا مَسْأَلَتُكَ قَالَ كَيْتَ وَ كَيْتَ فَأَجَابَهُ عَنْ سُؤَالِهِ فَقِيلَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كُنَّا عَهِدْنَاكَ إِذَا سُئِلْتَ عَنِ الْمَسْأَلَةِ كُنْتَ فِيهَا كَالسِّكَّةِ الْمُحْمَاةِ جَوَاباً فَمَا بَالُكَ أَبْطَأْتَ الْيَوْمَ عَنْ جَوَابِ هَذَا

A man asked 'Ali, peace be upon him, a question, and he hastened into his house and then came out and said: Where is the questioner? The man said: O Commander of the Faithful, I am here. He asked: What is your question? He said: It is such and such. And he answered him. It was said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, whenever we had a question of you, your answer was ready like a branding-iron; what is it that made your answer to this man slow
