Al-Fayruzabadi said: al-qintar, with kasra, is the weight of forty uqiyas of gold, or twelve hundred dinars, or twelve hundred uqiyas, or seventy thousand dinars, or eighty thousand dirhams, or a hundred ratls of gold or silver, or a thousand dinars, or an ox-hide filled with gold or silver. I say: perhaps the Imam, peace be upon him, gave teaching precedence over abundant charity that is not spent rightly in order to dispel a notion common among people — for they suppose that unlawful wealth given away in the dark is better than the scholars who bestow the true sciences upon those who deserve them. So the Imam, peace be upon him, dispelled that doubt by showing that charity from unlawful wealth is a burden upon its giver and has no merit; and then he recalled the merit of teaching knowledge when that knowledge is acted upon, so that the measure of its excellence and the loftiness of its worth might appear.

The Commentary of Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him, and al-Ihtijaj: It is related from Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him, from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: The scholars of our Shi'a are like frontier guards, preventing the assault of the devils upon our weak followers and barring the mastery of the devilish usurpers. Know, then, that whoever stands thus in defence of our Shi'a is a thousand times more meritorious than one who fights the Byzantines, the Turks and the Khazars — for the latter defends their bodies, while the former defends the faith of our followers.

"Al-murabata" is the guarding of the enemy's frontier. "Al-thaghr" is the border with the land of war and the places of danger among the openings of the lands. "Al-'ifrit" is something foul and repugnant, and one who presses into an affair with cunning and persistence. "Al-Khazar" is the name of a mountain; "khazar al-'uyun" means narrow-eyed.

The Commentary of Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him, and al-Ihtijaj: Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him, related from Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon him, that he said: A single jurist who sets out to rescue an orphan of our orphans — one who has neither seen us nor has access to us — and teaches him to the measure of his need, is harder for Iblis to bear than a thousand worshippers. For the worshipper strives only to save himself, whereas the jurist, besides himself, is concerned for all the servants of God, to deliver them from the hand of Iblis and his helpers. For this reason his rank with God is higher than that of a thousand thousand worshipping men and women.

Al-Ihtijaj and the Commentary of Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him: Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him, related from Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him, that he said: On the Day of Resurrection it will be said to the worshipper: "Well done! What a good man you were! You saved yourself and had no concern with anyone else. Enter, then, the Garden." Know that the jurist is the one whose good reaches all people and who delivers them from the hand of their enemies.
