تَفْنَی الدُّنْيَا قَرْناً قَرْناً مَا مِنْ يَوْمٍ يَمْضِي عَنَّا إِلَّا وَ هِيَ أَوْهَى مِنَّا رُكْناً قَدْ ضَيَّعْنَا دَاراً تَبْقَى وَ اسْتَوْطَنَّا دَاراً تَفْنَى لَسْنَا نَدْرِي مَا فَرَّطْنَا فِيهَا إِلَّا لَوْ قَدْ مِتْنَا قَالَ الْحَارِثُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ النَّصَارَى يَعْلَمُونَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ لَوْ عَلِمُوا ذَلِكَ لَمَا اتَّخَذُوا الْمَسِيحَ إِلَهاً مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ قَالَ فَذَهَبْتُ إِلَى الدَّيْرَانِيِّ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ بِحَقِّ الْمَسِيحِ عَلَيْكَ لَمَّا ضَرَبْتَ بِالنَّاقُوسِ عَلَى الْجِهَةِ الَّتِي تَضْرِبُهَا قَالَ فَأَخَذَ يَضْرِبُ وَ أَنَا أَقُولُ حَرْفاً حَرْفاً حَتَّى بَلَغَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ إِلَّا لَوْ قَدْ مِتْنَا فَقَالَ بِحَقِّ نَبِيِّكُمْ مَنْ أَخْبَرَكَ بِهَذَا قُلْتُ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعِي أَمْسِ قَالَ وَ هَلْ بَيْنَهُ وَ بَيْنَ النَّبِيِّ مِنْ قَرَابَةٍ قُلْتُ هُوَ ابْنُ عَمِّهِ قَالَ بِحَقِّ نَبِيِّكُمْ أَ سَمِعَ هَذَا مِنْ نَبِيِّكُمْ قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَأَسْلَمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ وَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي وَجَدْتُ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ أَنَّهُ يَكُونُ فِي آخِرِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ نَبِيٌّ وَ هُوَ يُفَسِّرُ مَا يَقُولُ النَّاقُوسُ.

The world perishes age by age. No day of our life passes but that some pillar of ours is weakened. We have squandered the abiding house and taken the perishing house for our homeland. We do not know what shortcoming we have committed in it, except at the moment when we die. Al-Harith said: O Commander of the Faithful, do the Christians themselves know this? He said: If they knew, they would not worship the Messiah instead of God. He says: I went to the monk and said: By the right of the Messiah, strike the clapper as you were striking it! He says: He struck it and I spoke word for word until I came to the last phrase. He said: By the right of your Prophet, who gave you this report? I said: A man who was with me yesterday. He said: Is there kinship between him and the Prophet? I said: He is his cousin. He said: By the right of your Prophet, did he hear it from your Prophet? I said: Yes. He accepted Islam and said: By God, I read in the Torah that at the end of the prophets there would be a prophet who would interpret what the clapper says.
