"Ta'" is the coming of God's religion to completion and perfection by the Qa'im of the family of Muhammad, may God bless him and his family; "tha'" is the reward and recompense of the believers for their righteous conduct. "Jim, ha', kha'": "jim" is God's beauty and greatness; "ha'" is God's forbearance and patience with the disobedience of the servants; "kha'" is the lowliness and shame of the wicked before the great God. "Dal" is God's religion and law. "Dhal" is the Possessor of Majesty. "Ra'" is His compassion and kindness, and "zay" is the earthquakes and violent shakings of the Resurrection. "Sin" is God's loftiness, eminence, light and radiance. "Shin" — "God has willed" — that is, whatever God wills comes to be (not what our hearts wish), and you cannot do anything but what God wills. "Sad" is a figure for the One true to His promise — that is, God's promise concerning making people cross the bridge and detaining the wrongdoers at the questioning admits of no breach. "Dad" is an abbreviation of "he has gone astray" — that is, whoever opposes Muhammad, may God bless him and his family, has gone astray. "Ta'" is Tuba, a tree in Paradise, and a good end reserved for the believers. "Za'" is "zann" — the believers' good opinion of God and the unbelievers' evil opinion of Him. "'Ayn" is taken from "'alim" (All-Knowing). "Ghayn" is independence and sufficiency. "Fa'" is relief — it conveys the opening of one of the doors of relief and deliverance. "Qaf" is the Qur'an, whose gathering and preservation from the ravages of events rests with God. "Kaf" is the Sufficient who makes independent, namely God. "Lam" is "laghw" (idle talk) or "la'n" (cursing), and what is meant is the unbelievers, concerning the lies they ascribe to God. "Mim" is God's dominion — the day on which sovereignty belongs to Him alone and on which He says: "To whom belongs the sovereignty this day?" The spirits of the prophets and the Imams speak and answer: "To God, the One, the All-Subduer." Then God says: "This day every soul will be recompensed for what it has earned. This day there is no injustice. Truly God is swift in reckoning." "Nun" is God's bestowal upon the believers and His requital of the unbelievers. "Waw" is "wayl" — the Pit of Wayl in Hell, the place of the wicked — or woe to him who disobeys the Lord. "Ha'" is "hawn" — the disobedience of the sinners and the enemies of God is worthless and of no account before Him. "Lam-alif: la" is "There is no god but God", which is the word of sincerity, and no servant says it sincerely but that Paradise becomes incumbent for him. "Ya'" is the hand of God — the hand of God's power is above the heads of His creatures in providing them sustenance; glory be to Him and exalted is He above what the associators ascribe to Him. Then he said: The great Lord sent down this Qur'an with these very letters by which people express their purposes, and challenged them to bring the like of it, as He said explicitly: "If mankind and jinn were to gather together to bring the like of this Qur'an, they would not bring the like of it, even if some of them were helpers of others."
