Al-Ihtijaj: And in another narration it is related that Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said to Abu Hanifa when he first entered: Who are you? He said: Abu Hanifa. He said: The very mufti of the people of Iraq? He said: Yes. He said: By what do you give rulings to the people? He said: By the Qur'an. He said: Do you know the whole Qur'an, from its abrogating and abrogated to its firm and ambiguous? He said: Yes. He said: What place is meant by God in the verse: "And We measured the journey between them: travel in them by night and by day in safety"? Abu Hanifa said: It is between Mecca and Medina. After this answer, Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, turned to the people of the gathering and said: I adjure you by God, has it ever happened that you travelled between Mecca and Medina and were safe for your lives and your property? They all said: No, by God it is as you say. Then the Imam, peace be upon him, said: Woe to you, O Abu Hanifa, God says nothing but the truth. Tell me, what place is meant by God in the verse: "And whoever enters it is safe"? He said: It is the Sacred House of God. The Imam, peace be upon him, turned to the people of the gathering and said: I adjure you by God, were 'Abdallah b. al-Zubayr and Sa'id b. Jubayr preserved from being killed by entering the Sacred House of God? They all said: By God, it is just as you say. The Imam said: Woe to you, O Abu Hanifa, God says nothing but the truth. Abu Hanifa said: I have no knowledge of the Qur'an, but I am learned in analogy. He said: Then by recourse to your knowledge of analogy, tell me: before God, which is the greater [sin], killing or fornication? He said: Killing. He said: Then why has God been content with two witnesses in a case of killing, but has not accepted less than four witnesses in a case of fornication? Then he said: Which is more excellent, prayer or fasting? He said: Prayer is more excellent. He said: Then on your analogy, the menstruating woman must make up the prayers she did not perform and not the fast — whereas God the Exalted has made it obligatory for her to make up the fast, not the prayer. Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said to Abu Hanifa: Which is the greater impurity, urine or semen? He said: Urine is more impure. He said: Then on your analogy, the major ablution is obligatory for urine and not for semen — whereas God the Exalted has made the major ablution obligatory for semen and not for urine. Abu Hanifa said: I am a man of opinion. He said: What is your view concerning a man and his slave who both marry on one and the same day [two women] and lie with their wives that same night, and then both set out on a journey and leave their wives in one house? After a time each of the two wives gives birth to a son. As it happens, the roof of the house falls in, the two women are killed and the two children remain. According to your opinion, which of these two boys is the slave and which the owner, and which is the heir and which the one inherited from? He said: I am versed only in the prescribed penalties.
