Chapter 30: The reward of one who performs a deed in the hope of a reward
Thawab al-A'mal: Safwan related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: Whoever is told that there is a reward in some good deed and performs that deed on account of the Prophet's hadith, may God bless him and his family, attains that reward, even if the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, did not say it.
Al-Mahasin: Marwan related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: Whoever is told of a reward from the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, for some deed and performs that deed on account of the Prophet's hadith, may God bless him and his family, attains that reward, even if the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, did not say it.
Al-Mahasin: Hisham b. Salim related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: Whoever is told of a reward from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, for some deed, and then performs that deed, the recompense of that deed is preserved for him, even if the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, did not say it.
The above report is among the well-known reports, with chains, among the Shi'a and the Sunnis, and Thiqat al-Islam al-Kulayni has transmitted it in al-Kafi by the chain of 'Ali b. Ibrahim.
Muhammad b. Marwan says: I heard Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, say: Whoever is told of a reward from God for some deed, and then performs that deed for the sake of its reward, attains that reward, even if we have no hadith on that subject.
Al-Sayyid Ibn Tawus, after mentioning the narration of Hisham b. Salim from the noble book al-Kafi by the said chain, said: I found this hadith in the original source-book of Hisham b. Salim, may God have mercy on him, from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him.
I say: On account of the coming of these reports you see that many of the companions and the scholars of the Twelver school argue by weak and unknown reports concerning practices and manners, and concerning dislike and recommendation, in order to establish them by these. The following objections have been raised against this practice. First: Certainly recommendation, like obligation, is a ruling of the law; there is no difference between obligation and recommendation, and contenting oneself with weak hadiths concerning recommendation is as problematic as contenting oneself with weak hadiths in establishing obligation.
