Al-Mahasin: Some of the companions related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: We heard him say: Whoever knows that we say nothing but the truth, let him content himself with what we say; and if he hears from us something contrary to what he knows, let him know that this is our defence of him [perhaps it is on account of dissimulation].

Al-Kafi: Al-Khath'ami related the like of it from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him.

Nahj al-Balagha: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, wrote in his covenant to Malik al-Ashtar: Those addresses that weigh heavily on you and render you unable and make matters doubtful for you, refer back to God and the Messenger; God the Exalted said to a people whose guidance He loved: "O you who believe, obey God and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you; and if you dispute about anything, refer it to God and the Messenger." What is meant by referring it to God is taking the firm verses of the Qur'an, and referring it to the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, is taking the mass-transmitted practice of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family.

"Ma yudli'uka" means what weighs heavily upon you; and in some copies it is with a za', that is, what inclines you and renders you unable; and "zala'u" means they fell back and broke off. And perhaps what is meant by the uniting, non-dividing practice is the successively transmitted practice; and it has been said: that their intentions in taking to the practice be one.

Tafsir al-'Ayyashi: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said in the sermon at Mina or Mecca: O people, the report that has reached you and that accords with the Qur'an — that I have said; and whatever has reached you from me that does not accord with the Qur'an — that I have not said.

Tafsir al-'Ayyashi: Muhammad b. Muslim related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: O Muhammad, whatever narration reaches you from a good man or a bad one that accords with the Qur'an, take it; and whatever narration reaches you from a good man or a bad one that differs from the Qur'an, leave it.

Tafsir al-'Ayyashi: Imam al-Baqir and Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon them, said: Do not credit a report from us except what accords with the Book of God and the practice of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family.

Tafsir al-'Ayyashi: Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon him, said: When two
