Al-Mahasin: 'Ali b. Ayyub related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, said: When a hadith of mine reaches you, choose and accept from among the differing reports the most agreeable, the easiest and the nearest of them to right guidance. If it accords with the Book of God, I have said it; otherwise I have not said it.
"Al-nihla" means a gift and a present, and perhaps what is meant by it here is that whenever differing hadiths come to you, take those that are the more agreeable, the easier and the nearer to guidance and truth; so that "nihla" is a figure for accepting the Imam's word, peace be upon him, and acting upon it. It is also possible that those mentioned qualities stand in place of the verbal noun, that is, "inhaluni ahna' nihal wa ashalaha wa arshadaha". The upshot and summary of the words is that whatever comes to you from me, the Prophet, you should accept in the best manner; and what he mentioned afterwards is an exception.
