And he also said: The scholar excels the worshipper by seventy degrees, between every two degrees being the running of a horse for seventy years. That is because Satan sets up an innovation for the people, and the scholar sees it and forbids it; whereas the worshipper has turned to his own worship, pays it no heed and does not recognise it.

Rawdat al-Wa'izin: And the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — said: Shall I tell you of folk who are neither prophets nor martyrs, whom on the Day of Resurrection the prophets and the martyrs will envy for their stations before God upon pulpits of light? It was said: O Messenger of God, who are they? He said: They are those who cast the love of God into the hearts of His servants and make the servants beloved to God. We said: We understand casting the love of God into the servants' hearts; but how do they make the servants beloved to God? He said: They bid the servants do what God loves and forbid them what He dislikes; and when they obey, God loves them.

'Awali al-La'ali: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: God does not snatch knowledge away outright; rather He takes it away by the death of the scholars, until not one of them remains. Then people take ignorant men as their leaders, and these give fatwas without knowledge; so they go astray and lead others astray.

Al-Ikhtisas: Imam Musa al-Kazim, peace be upon him, said: Whoever establishes a good practice has its reward, and the reward of everyone who acts upon that good practice, without anything being diminished from the rewards of those who act; and whoever establishes an evil practice bears its sin, and the sin of everyone who acts upon it, without anything being diminished from their sins.

Nawadir al-Rawandi: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Whoever makes a good intercession, or enjoins what is right, or forbids what is wrong, or directs someone to a good deed, or points to a good deed, shall be a partner in those good deeds — just as one who by a hint or a direction drives another to a wrong and improper act is a partner with the wrongdoer in the deed and its punishment.
