Tahzib al-Ahkam: 'Ali b. Mahziyar said: In the book of 'Abdallah b. Muhammad there was [a question] and I asked al-Imam 'Ali al-Naqi, peace be upon him: Our companions differ in their narration from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, concerning the two units of the supererogatory dawn prayer while travelling. Some of the companions have related that these two units are to be prayed in the litter, and some of the companions have related that these two units are not to be prayed except on the ground. So inform me what you do, that I may follow you in the supererogatory prayer of dawn. He wrote: There is latitude for you, whichever of the two you act upon.

I say: Al-Shaykh Qutb al-Din al-Rawandi in Risalat al-Fuqaha, according to what some trustworthy persons have related from him, related by his chain from al-Saduq, from Ibn al-Walid, from al-Saffar, from Ibn 'Isa, from a man, from Yunus b. 'Abd al-Rahman, from al-Hasan b. al-Sari, that Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: When two differing hadiths come to you, take the hadith that differs from the Sunnis.
Al-Hasan b. Jahm says: I said to the righteous servant, al-Imam Musa al-Kazim, peace be upon him: Is anything permissible for us concerning what comes to us from you other than submission to your word? He said: No, nothing is permissible but submission to our word. By God, there is no leave for you but submission to us and to our word. I said: But something is related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, and the contrary of that very thing is also related from him! Which, then, are we to take? He said: Take the report that differs from the Sunnis, and keep away from the report that accords with the Sunnis.
The narrator says: I said to al-Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him: When two conflicting reports have issued from you, what is the duty of us Shi'a? He said: When two differing hadiths come to you, look at the two reports and take the report that differs from the Sunnis, and the report that accords with the reports of the Sunnis — leave it.
Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: When two differing hadiths come to you, present that hadith to the Book of God; take the hadith that accords with the Book of God and leave what differs from the Book of God. If you do not find these two differing reports in the Book of God, then present them to the reports of the Sunnis; leave the report that accords with the reports of the Sunnis and take what differs from the reports of the Sunnis.
Al-'Aqa'id of al-Saduq: Our belief concerning an explanatory hadith is that it governs the undetermined, as Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said.
