"And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it." One who does not understand what God and the Messenger intend falls into error. It was not the case that every one of the companions of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, who asked him about something would understand its answer correctly. Some of them would ask him about something and would not succeed in grasping his intent, and did not comprehend his words. The way of benefiting from the Prophet was difficult for them, so much so that they wished some bedouin, some newcomer, would arrive and question him so that he would answer and they would hear. I had one appointed time every day when I would come into the presence of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, and one appointed time every night. In these two times he left me free to be with him however it might be. All the companions of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, knew that he had with no one of the people the accommodation he had with me. This appointed time of mine was sometimes in my own house; most often the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, would come to my house; and when I went into one of his dwellings he would be alone with me and send his wives out from my presence, and none remained with him but me. And when he came to be alone with me in my own house, he did not send out Fatima al-Zahra nor any of my children. When I asked him he would answer, and when I sat silent and my questions came to an end, he himself would begin to speak. Not a single verse of the Qur'an came down upon him but that he recited it to me and dictated it to me slowly until I wrote it in my own hand, and he taught me its interpretation and its explanation and asked God to grant me the understanding and the memorising of it. From the time he prayed for me, I have not forgotten a single verse of the Book of God, nor have I forgotten any knowledge that he recited to me and that I wrote down. He did not fall short in teaching me. Whatever God had taught him of the lawful and the unlawful, the command and the prohibition, that has been or that will be, he taught to me. Every book that had come down to one of the prophets before him, concerning a command that must be obeyed or a prohibition of a sin, he taught me, and I committed it to memory. I did not forget a single letter of it. Then he placed his hand upon my breast and asked God to fill my heart with knowledge, understanding, judgement and light. I said to him: O Prophet of God, may my father and mother be your ransom, do you fear forgetfulness for me after this? He said: No, I have no anxiety concerning you on the score of forgetfulness and ignorance.
