The report is long; God the Exalted willing, we shall give it in full in the chapter on compulsion and delegation.

Amali al-Saduq: Al-Sakuni related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, from his fathers, from 'Ali, peace be upon him, that he said: Every truth has a reality and every rightness has a light. Take whatever accords with the Qur'an and leave whatever differs from it.

Reality is the quiddity of a thing upon which that thing's being what it is and its subsistence depend; and what is meant by reality here is the actual cause of a thing's coming to be, such as God's ruling and command in the rulings of the law, and such as correspondence with the fact of the matter in the rulings of report, its use for which is figurative. Light is the proof and demonstration by which the realities of things become clear; and the point is that God the Exalted has placed for everything a proof and a demonstration in the Book and in the practice of the Prophet, and therefore it is obligatory that reports be presented to the Book of God.

Qurb al-Isnad: Ibn 'Ulwan relates from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, that he said: I read in a book that was the writing of 'Ali, peace be upon him: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Lies will soon be told against me, just as lies were told against the prophets before me. So whatever hadith comes to you from me that accords with the Book of God, that is my hadith; but the hadith that differs from the Book of God is not my hadith.

Al-Kafi: Sama'a said: I asked Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: There is a man, and two of his own co-religionists give differing rulings in one religious question, and each has a narration for his statement; one commands him to do a thing and the other forbids him that thing — what is this man to do? He said: Let him postpone grasping the reality until he reaches an Imam who will inform him of the truth of the matter; until he meets the Imam he has his choice in the matter.

In another report: Whichever of the two reports you act upon by way of submission to the command is permissible for you.

Al-Kafi: Al-Husayn b. al-Mukhtar related from someone who said: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said to me: Tell me, if I tell you a hadith this year and next year when you come to me I tell you the opposite of it, which of the two hadiths will you act upon? I said: The second. He said: May God have mercy on you.

Al-Kafi: Ibn Khunays said: I said to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: If a hadith comes from the previous Imam and a hadith contrary to it from the later Imam,
