Basa'ir al-Darajat: Al-Mufaddal b. 'Umar says: I said to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: How does a prophet know that he is a prophet? He said: The veil is drawn aside from before his eyes. I said: How is it known that someone is a believer? He said: In every event that befalls him, he submits to God.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Durays says: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: If the Voice that is heard from heaven at the time of the Qa'im's rising (may God hasten his relief) were not to come, what would you do? I said: By God, we are under your command. He said: By God, the command binding upon us is submission itself; otherwise there is nothing but the cutting of throats and perishing — and he pointed with his blessed hand to his throat.
Elucidation: "Al-sawt" is the call that is heard from heaven at the rising of the Qa'im (may God hasten his relief). Perhaps what is meant is: if this voice which you are awaiting in the near future is delayed, what will you do? Will you rise with the sword without hearing that voice? So the narrator said: In this matter we are submissive to your command. The Imam, peace be upon him, said: Submitting to our command, or our binding and obligatory command, is submission; and if you do not do so and hasten in seeking relief before its time comes, that will lead to your being killed, or to ours.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Zurara and Humran say: A man of the Shi'a used to sit with us; whenever he heard a hadith from the Imams, peace be upon them, he would say: Submit — until people gave him the nickname "Submit". So whenever he entered a gathering they would say: Mr "Submit" has come. Humran and Zurara went in to Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, and said: A man of our companions, when he hears anything of your hadiths, says: Submit; indeed he has been given the nickname "Submit" — whenever he enters a gathering people say: Mr "Submit" has come in. He said: Truly those who submit have prospered. Truly the Muslims are the noble ones.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Ayyub b. al-Hurr, Udaym's brother, says: I heard Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, saying: A man of the partisans of 'Uthman used to revile 'Ali, peace be upon him, much. Their friend brought me word that this person was coming to give us his allegiance. When he came and was present in the gathering, the Imam said: What have we to do with them? He said: May I be your ransom, has this man not believed? The Imam said: Have you not heard the words of God, exalted: "But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in what is in dispute among them"? He only said: Far, far from it! By God it is far indeed, so long as doubt is in the heart, even though he fast and pray.
