Or what is meant is a span of five hundred years — that is, the scholar and the worshipper move about in the place of gathering, the scholar going about there ahead of the worshipper and five hundred years before him.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Ibn Ziyad related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, from his father, that the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — said: The superiority of the scholar over the worshipper is like the superiority of the sun over the other stars; and the superiority of the worshipper over one who is not a worshipper is like the superiority of the moon over the other stars.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Muhammad al-Barqi said: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: One scholar is better than a thousand worshippers and a thousand ascetics.

And he, peace be upon him, said: A scholar whose knowledge is profited by is better than the worship of seventy thousand worshippers.

Thawab al-A'mal: Al-Saffar, from Ibn 'Isa, the like of it.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Al-Bazanti related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: One prayer-cycle performed by the jurist is better than seventy thousand prayer-cycles performed by the worshipper.

Thawab al-A'mal: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: No one utters a word of truth upon which others act but that he has a reward like the reward of the one who acts upon it; and no one utters a misguiding word upon which others act but that he bears a burden of sin like the burden of the one who acts upon it.

Al-Mahasin: Muhammad related from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, that he said: Whoever teaches a gate of guidance has the reward of those who act upon it, and nothing shall be diminished from their rewards; and whoever teaches a gate of error bears the burden of those who act upon it, and nothing shall be diminished from their burdens.

Al-Mahasin: Abu Basir related from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, that he said: Do not dispute and quarrel with people, for if people were able to love us they would love us.

With fatha on the ba'. Al-Najashi lists him in his Rijal, p. 175, saying: 'Ali b. Abi Hamza — Abu Hamza's name being Salim al-Bata'ini, Abu al-Hasan, a client of the Ansar, of Kufa — was the guide of Abu Basir Yahya b. al-Qasim. He had a brother named Ja'far b. Abi Hamza. He related from Abu al-Hasan Musa, peace be upon him, and from Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him; then he became a Waqifi, and he is one of the pillars of the Waqifa. He composed several books, among them: Kitab al-Salat, Kitab al-Zakat, Kitab al-Tafsir — most of it from Abu Basir — and a comprehensive book on the chapters of jurisprudence.
