without excuse brings God's anger; that you pay the alms; that you fast the month of Ramadan; that you perform the pilgrimage to the House if you have wealth and the means; that you are not disobedient to your parents; that you do not wrongfully consume an orphan's property; that you do not consume usury; that you do not drink wine or any intoxicating drink; that you do not commit fornication; that you do not commit sodomy; that you do not carry tales. By God, that you do not swear falsely, do not steal, and do not bear false witness for anyone, whether kin or stranger; that you accept the truth from whoever brings it to you, be he small or great; that you do not rely upon a wrongdoer even though he be your near kinsman; that you are not a slave of your desires; that you do not slander or falsely accuse chaste women; that you do not act for show, for the least ostentation is associating partners with God. That you do not call a short man short or a tall man tall by way of finding fault. That you do not mock any of God's creatures; that you are patient in trial and affliction; that you give thanks for every blessing God has given you; that you are not at ease concerning God's punishment; that you do not despair of God's mercy; that you repent to God of your sins, for one who repents of a sin is as one who has not sinned. That you do not persist in sin and then seek forgiveness and so be like one who mocks God and His prophets and messengers. That you know that what has been apportioned to you will not escape you, and what has escaped you would never have reached you. That you do not anger God for the sake of pleasing a creature. That you do not prefer this world to the Hereafter, for this world is perishing and the Hereafter abiding. That you are not miserly towards your brothers with what you have. That your inward and outward be one. That you not be fair of outward and foul of inward, for if you are so you are of the hypocrites. That you do not lie and do not keep company with liars, and do not grow angry at a word of truth. That you discipline yourself, your household, your children and your neighbours to the best of your ability. That you act upon what you know, and deal with none of God's creatures save by the truth. That you be of good conduct with kin and stranger, and not be a tyrant or an obstinate opponent. That you say "Glory be to God" and "Praise be to God" often and make much supplication. That you remember death often, and what comes after death, and the Resurrection, Paradise and Hell. That you recite the Qur'an much and act upon what is in it. That you count as gain and take care of goodness and generosity towards the believers, men and women. That whatever you do not like for yourself, you do not do to any believer. Do not be weary of a good deed. Do not place your burden upon another's shoulders. Do not reproach with favours anyone to whom you have given a blessing. Look upon this world as your prison, that God may grant you Paradise. These are the forty hadiths; whoever stands firm upon them and keeps them from me for my community,

(١)1- أي أن لا تثق بالظالم و لا تستأمنه.That is, that you do not trust the wrongdoer and do not count him trustworthy.
(٢)2- الحميم: القريب الذي تهتم بامره. الصديق."Hamim": a near kinsman whose affairs you attend to; a friend.
