«37»- And Abu Muhammad al-'Askari, peace be upon him, said: Beauty of form is an outward beauty, and beauty of intellect is an inward beauty.

«38»- And he, peace be upon him, said: If the people of the world had intellect, it would be laid waste.

«39»- nhj, the Nahj al-Balagha: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: Seeing is not with the eyes; the eyes may lie to their owners, but the intellect does not deceive one who seeks its counsel.

Elucidation: that is, true seeing is the seeing of the intellect, because the senses are at times subject to error.

«40»- nhj, the Nahj al-Balagha: He, peace be upon him, said: There is no wealth like the intellect, no poverty like ignorance, no inheritance like discipline, and no support like consultation.

«41»- And he, peace be upon him, said: The richest wealth is the intellect, and the greatest poverty is folly.

«42»- And he, peace be upon him, said: There is no wealth more beneficial than the intellect, and no intellect like good management.

«43»- And he, peace be upon him, said: Forbearance is a covering veil, and the intellect a cutting blade (1). So veil the flaws of your character with your forbearance, and fight your caprice with your intellect.

«44»- Kanz al-Karajaki: The Prophet — may God bless him and his family — said: For everything there is an instrument and an equipment, and the believer's instrument and equipment is the intellect. For everything there is a mount, and a man's mount is the intellect. For everything there is an end, and the end of worship is the intellect. For every people there is a shepherd, and the shepherd of the worshippers is the intellect. For every merchant there is merchandise, and the merchandise of those who strive is the intellect. For every ruin there is a rebuilding, and the rebuilding of the hereafter is the intellect. For every travelling party there is a tent to which they resort, and the tent of the Muslims is the intellect.

«45»- And the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: There is no equipment more beneficial than the intellect, and no enemy more harmful than ignorance.

«46»- And he said: A man's adornment is his intellect.

«47»- And he, peace be upon him, said: The severing of the man of intellect equals the joining of the ignorant.

«48»- And he, peace be upon him, said: Whoever's intellect is not the greatest thing in him, his slaying is by the greatest thing in him.

Al-batir: the cutting. He likened forbearance to a covering veil because forbearance prevents the appearance of the base traits of character that anger entails. And he likened the intellect to a cutting blade because by the intellect man slays his most hostile enemy, namely his caprice; and by it he prevails over his soul, and holds it back from gaining mastery over the kingdom of the body, and prevents it from doing what harms its state.
